Eternal Wanderers – Alternative Histories

Eternal Wanderers – Alternative Histories (Auotoproduzione, 2026)

Pubblicato l’8 settembre 2026, l’album prende spunto dalle idee e dai libri di Stephen Hawking, in particolare The Grand Design e A Brief History of Time, utilizzando alcune espressioni tratte dalle sue pagine come punto di partenza per otto composizioni.

Eternal Wanderers – Alternative Histories (Self-released 2026)

Between Possible Universes, Quantum Mysteries and Cosmic Vertigo

There are albums that take science as a starting point and transform theories and concepts into something else, using music to open up new possibilities. Alternative Histories by Eternal Wanderers is born from precisely this meeting point between scientific thought, imagination and music. Released on September 8, 2026, the album draws inspiration from the ideas and books of Stephen Hawking, particularly The Grand Design and A Brief History of Time, using expressions taken from his pages as starting points for eight compositions.

Eternal Wanderers are a Progressive Rock band from Moscow, founded in 1997 by sisters Elena and Tatyana Kanevskaya. From the very beginning, the band has focused on complex musical structures and an approach to Progressive Rock that leaves room for experimentation. After their first concert in 1998, they became part of Moscow’s underground scene, also attracting attention for the visual impact of their performances, which featured psychedelic projections on a large screen behind the stage.

In 2006, the lineup finally stabilized and Eternal Wanderers entered the studio to record their first album, The Door To A Parallel World, a project that took more than a year to complete. The album explores parallel worlds and fantastic planets, alternating instrumental passages close to Prog Metal with more dreamy and atmospheric moments. That curiosity about realities different from our own returns in Alternative Histories, but from a different perspective: no longer simply through fantasy, but through science, cosmology and the possibilities opened up by quantum physics.

The track titles are expressions taken directly from Hawking’s books, deliberately removed from their original context. From these words emerges a musical journey built around associations and questions: what would an alternative version of our life look like? How can reality change when an observer becomes part of the equation? And what might happen when artificial intelligence becomes a possible threat to the future? Eternal Wanderers do not attempt to provide definitive answers, but transform these questions into music, allowing atmospheres, voices and instruments to develop their suggestions.

It is within this space between Progressive Rock, cosmic atmospheres and electronics that the band’s sound takes shape. The lineup features Elena Kanevskaya on lead vocals, keyboards and synthesizers, Tatyana Kanevskaya on guitars and vocals, Dmitry Shtatnov on bass and vocals, and Sergey Rogulya on drums. Guitars and rhythm section interact with keyboards and synthesizers, shaping expansive and intricate compositions in which vocal passages alternate with more atmospheric and instrumental sections. Electronics help broaden the sonic space and create the cosmic dimension that accompanies the album’s journey through alternative realities, scientific questions and imagination.

The album opens with the title track, Alternative Histories, featuring Elena Kanevskaya on lead vocals. The title immediately introduces one of the album’s central themes: the idea of a reality that could develop in different ways. It is an opening that sets the story in motion without feeling the need to explain everything, allowing the music itself to suggest the possible directions.

With Quantum Domain, the album moves more directly into the world of quantum physics. Elena Kanevskaya’s vocals accompany this nearly ten-minute piece, in which keyboards, synthesizers and rhythm section broaden the album’s scope and bring its spirit of exploration to the forefront. This is not a physics lesson, however: scientific concepts become material for the imagination.

The Earth Moving Under My Feet continues along the same path, with Tatyana Kanevskaya on lead vocals and a title that immediately suggests a feeling of instability. The earth moving beneath one’s feet becomes an effective image for an album in which certainties are constantly being questioned, while the music develops this feeling through an expansive and atmospheric journey. Tatyana’s guitar work is also particularly effective here.

Shorter and more immediate is Game Of Life, featuring Tatyana Kanevskaya on lead vocals. The intelligent use of electronics helps create a distinctive atmosphere without overwhelming the melodic side of the song. The title evokes life as a game, but also as a set of possibilities in which every choice can alter what comes next.

The instrumental The Edge Of The World returns to a longer format and develops its journey through several changes of atmosphere. The music moves from more intimate passages to broader openings, giving the track a sense of exploration that fits the idea suggested by its title: reaching the edge without knowing what might lie beyond it.

The longest track on the album is The Shadow of Impending Doom, running for more than twelve minutes. The music was written by Dmitry Shtatnov, who also provides the vocals, while the lyrics were written by Elena Kanevskaya. The sense of threat already present in the title connects with the album’s reflection on artificial intelligence and the possible future of humanity. The music consequently emphasizes the darker side of the record, turning scientific reflection into a more unsettling and dramatic atmosphere.

Luminiferous Ether brings Elena Kanevskaya back to the vocals and introduces another term connected with the history of physics. The concept of the luminiferous ether belongs to a theory that was eventually abandoned, but within Alternative Histories it once again becomes a way of looking at knowledge as something that changes over time.

The album closes with CMBR, a strongly cosmic instrumental built around broad layers of synthesizers that expand the sonic space and give the music an almost sidereal sense of depth. The title refers to the cosmic microwave background, that faint trace preserving a memory of the universe’s origins, and provides a particularly evocative ending to the Eternal Wanderers’ journey. After exploring alternative realities, individual possibilities and questions about the nature of existence, the album ends by looking toward the immensity of the cosmos, with music that seems to slowly drift away from Earth and disappear into space.

Alternative Histories is ultimately an album in which ideas, questions and scientific suggestions become music. Stephen Hawking provides the starting point through his words and theories, but Eternal Wanderers transform them into a personal journey filled with possibilities, mysteries and images. This is perhaps the record’s greatest appeal: it does not attempt to explain the universe, but invites us to look at it differently, allowing music to open doors toward realities we can only imagine.

Between Progressive Rock, cosmic atmospheres, electronics and a strong vocal presence, the band creates a journey that begins with individual experience and gradually expands into questions about the nature of reality and the origins of the cosmos. It is an album that can appeal to those who enjoy atmospheric Progressive Rock, but also to anyone who looks to music as a space for reflection, imagination and escape beyond what is immediately familiar.

Recommended for listeners who enjoy Progressive Rock, cosmic atmospheres, and albums that combine sonic exploration, melody and imagination.
