Ellen River – Looking For A Rainbow (Autoproduzione, 2026)
Are We Living For Exceptions? introduce sfumature country soul, con una bella combinazione di sensibilità melodica e radici americane.
Con Take Me To The Canyon ci troviamo in un'atmosfera che richiama il mondo western.
I Just Wanted to Be Loved ci riporta invece a una dimensione più intima.

English version
Ellen River – Looking For A Rainbow (Independent Release, 2026)
12 songs to rediscover beauty, even in the most difficult times
I have been following Ellen River's wonderful artistic journey since her debut. Over the years, this singer-songwriter from Modena has won me over with the sensitivity of her compositions, the distinctive character of her voice and her deep connection with American musical traditions. With Looking For A Rainbow, her new album, Ellen once again turns her attention to the world around us, without concealing the anxieties and contradictions of the present. The twelve original songs feature a more stripped-down production than her previous album, Life (2023), allowing more room for the songs themselves, their lyrics and emotions. This is another chapter in an artistic journey I continue to follow with great interest, confirming her ability to turn personal experiences and sensitivity into music.
Released on 6 November 2026 on CD and as a limited-edition vinyl, Looking For A Rainbow is a deeply personal project. Its title already suggests a direction: looking for a rainbow means continuing to believe in beauty, even when everything seems to be moving in the opposite direction.
Ellen River explores themes that speak directly to our times, giving voice to a sense of unease and frustration born from observing a reality that is becoming increasingly difficult to understand. Her songs offer opportunities to reflect on the relationship between human beings and the world, the loss of sensitivity, emotional decline and the need to rediscover a genuine connection with nature.
There is more than anger in these compositions. There is also a desire to react and to protect everything that still has value. Nature plays a central role, not simply as part of the landscape, but as a presence that can remind us of something essential: a place to return to in search of a balance that seems to be gradually slipping away.
Another important theme is the value of art and human creativity, increasingly at risk of being subordinated to technology and the pursuit of profit. Ellen underlines the importance of artistic expression as part of our cultural and human heritage, something that cannot be reduced to a commodity or replaced by automated production.
Joining the singer-songwriter are several musicians who also appeared on Life: Boris Casadei on guitars, Diego Sapignoli on drums and percussion, and Rodolfo Valdifiori on bass. They are joined by Alex Valle on pedal steel and banjo, Alessandro Pagliarani on baritone, tenor and alto saxophones, Michele Roselli on violin, and Chris Horses on vocals. The line-up is completed by Paolo Guazzi on bass and Gianluca Morelli on piano and sound design. Morelli also handled the recording, mixing and mastering at DeckLab Studio in Rimini.
What gives Looking For A Rainbow its sense of unity is Ellen River's distinctive vocal personality. Her warm, engaging voice moves naturally through the album's different moods, from quieter acoustic passages to the more energetic sounds of rock. Each song has its own identity while remaining connected to the emotional thread running through the entire record.
The album opens with Shadows, a brief song with a contemporary gospel feel, built around Ellen's voice and the sound textures created by Gianluca Morelli. It is a restrained yet evocative beginning, introducing the sense of unease that runs through the album and the need to find a way out of a reality in which we often feel trapped.
With Looking For A Rainbow, the song that gives the album its title, Ellen River expresses the deeper meaning behind her work. Musically, it is a ballad that begins gently and gradually builds, drawing the listener further in. Folk and rock sounds accompany an intense melody, leaving plenty of space for the voice and lyrics. The song speaks of the desire to keep looking for beauty and hope, even when the world is going through difficult times. It is an invitation to hold on to our sensitivity, refuse to give up and protect everything that makes life more beautiful.
C’Mon Be a Man moves into blues-rock territory, with a direct approach and a strong character. The song feels like a telling-off, urging us to recognise our responsibilities and stop standing by indifferently. It is a particularly well-suited setting for Ellen's voice.
Are We Living For Exceptions? introduces country-soul influences, bringing together melodic sensitivity and American roots. The song fits naturally into the album's journey, maintaining a balance between personal reflection and awareness of what is happening around us.
With Take Me To The Canyon, we enter an atmosphere that recalls the world of the Western. Its beautiful, melancholic melody accompanies a desire to escape a society increasingly tied to technology and the fast pace of modern life. It is a song about finding a little peace, tranquillity and freedom in nature.
Foxes, Coyotes, Wolves And Rabbits draws on Americana and the natural world. Alex Valle's pedal steel adds a delicate touch, creating a distinctive atmosphere that seems almost outside of time. The song expresses Ellen's desire to rediscover a more genuine connection with nature and the world around us.
With Keep On Walking, the mood changes considerably. The song develops into an energetic soul-rock number, enhanced by the horns and highlighting the more assertive side of the singer-songwriter. Ellen delivers it with an intense, determined voice, supported by an arrangement full of energy and a desire to fight back.
I Just Wanted to Be Loved takes us into a more intimate setting. The slow rhythm of this country waltz accompanies a delicate melody, allowing Ellen to reveal the full sensitivity of her performance. Her voice finds a beautiful counterpart in Chris Horses, whose contribution is both intense and heartfelt. It is one of the album's most moving moments, with an emotional vulnerability that makes the song particularly affecting.
Here To Stay brings a burst of energy, with a more carefree rock feel and an immediate appeal. The lyrics also turn towards the beauty of nature, offering a series of images that celebrate its richness. It is a lively song in which the rock element finds one of its most enjoyable expressions.
In Your Hands, folk-rock sounds accompany an intense vocal performance that gradually builds to a particularly powerful climax. Ellen brings out the full expressive strength of her voice, giving the song a distinctive and personal character.
The album closes with Not Able To Quit, I’m Not Done, a song in which acoustic guitar, Alex Valle's banjo and Michele Roselli's violin accompany Ellen in an atmosphere that recalls the American folk tradition. Its title already conveys a message of determination and the will to keep moving forward without giving in to difficulties. It is an ending that perfectly reflects the spirit of Looking For A Rainbow and its invitation to keep believing in what truly matters.
The visual presentation also helps define the identity of the project. The cover artwork and inner illustrations are by Giulia Astrid Imbrogli, who has translated the singer-songwriter's original concept into images. The graphic design and photography are once again handled by Antonio Boschi of WIT Grafica&Comunicazione, as they were for Life. The illustrations depict a world in which darkness advances, wiping out colours, while human beings and animals come together in an act of resistance. It is a powerful image that complements the message of the songs and visually conveys the desire not to give up.
To better understand Ellen River's artistic journey, it is worth recalling her previous album, Life, a double release from 2023 featuring twenty-seven original songs. It was an important project in her artistic development, receiving positive responses from both critics and audiences and earning her the L'artista che non c'era award that same year. In 2025, the British publication Americana UK also took notice, naming her among the European artists to watch in the Americana scene.
Her music is deeply rooted in the American singer-songwriter tradition, with important influences such as Lucinda Williams and Joan Osborne. Ellen also had the opportunity to open concerts for both artists during their Italian dates in Chiari and Modena.
With Looking For A Rainbow, Ellen River delivers an album that goes beyond simply describing the world around us. Its twelve songs recognise a world that seems to have lost something important, while also expressing the determination not to be overwhelmed by disappointment and indifference. Her voice accompanies these reflections with sensitivity and passion, moving from the power of rock to the delicacy of more intimate moments without ever losing its authenticity.
This is an album that invites us to pause, listen and, above all, look at the world around us with a renewed sense of wonder. Nature, beauty, art and human feelings become things to cherish, small points of reference in a time when everything seems to be consumed too quickly. Perhaps this is the most beautiful message Ellen has to offer: despite the shadows, we must never stop looking for the light. A rainbow does not erase the rain that came before it, but reminds us that something wonderful can return even after the storm. And as the final notes fade away, what remains is the feeling of having listened to a sincere work, one that touches the heart and reminds us how important it is to keep believing in beauty.
If you enjoy albums that move you, leave a lasting impression and make you think, Looking For A Rainbow is one I can wholeheartedly recommend. A sincere record, full of sensitivity and passion, not to be missed.
