Ci sono viaggi che iniziano con un biglietto aereo e altri che nascono da una necessità interiore, da un sogno che diventa troppo grande per restare chiuso in un cassetto. Quello dei Sacromud appartiene a entrambe le categorie. Parte da Gubbio e attraversa 8.292 chilometri, con un’unica destinazione: Memphis, Tennessee. Un luogo che per chi ama la musica è più di una città: è una leggenda, un punto di ritorno, un fiume di note che ha plasmato intere generazioni.
The Sun Experience è il diario sonoro di questo pellegrinaggio contemporaneo. Non è solo un disco, è la fotografia di un momento irripetibile: la prima band italiana a varcare la soglia dei Sun Recording Studios, lo spazio sacro dove hanno inciso Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Roy Orbison. Portare lì la propria musica significa non solo misurarsi con la storia, ma lasciarsi attraversare dalla sua eco e ridarle voce in sette tracce che sanno di Mississippi e Appennino umbro insieme.
Maurizio Pugno, chitarra, arrangiamenti e direzione musicale, è l’anima di questa spedizione sonora. Accanto a lui Raffo Barbi, voce potente e intensa; Franz Piombino al basso; Alex Fiorucci alle tastiere; Riccardo Fiorucci alla batteria; e i fiati incalzanti dei The Cape Horns (Mirko Pugno alla tromba, Lorenzo Bisogno al sax tenore, Andrea Angeloni al trombone, Cesare Bedini al sax baritono). Insieme danno vita a un sound che respira blues, soul, rock, funk, R&B e che porta dentro anche il rumore del viaggio, i profumi del grande fiume, le contraddizioni di un’America reale e sincera.
I sette brani scorrono come un racconto in capitoli, ognuno con la sua atmosfera distinta, tappe di un viaggio che parte da Gubbio e approda nel cuore pulsante di Memphis.
Si parte con “The Mule”, già apparso su Resized del 2021 ma qui rigenerato: il suono si fa più caldo e viscerale, grazie a un groove incisivo costruito sul dialogo tra la chitarra di Maurizio Pugno e la ritmica compatta di basso e batteria. I fiati dei Cape Horns aggiungono un respiro soul che sembra uscire direttamente dalle pareti dei Sun Studios, impregnate di storia. La voce di Raffo Barbi è intensa, graffiante e controllata al tempo stesso, capace di dare corpo a ogni parola. È come se la band volesse traghettare la propria identità verso nuove acque, senza dimenticare le proprie radici.
“Holy Day” è un inno vibrante che cattura la spiritualità del luogo, sospeso tra riverberi gospel e una tensione blues che scorre sotto pelle. Qui la chitarra di Maurizio Pugno cesella fraseggi delicati mentre l’organo Hammond di Alex Fiorucci riempie lo spazio sonoro con un calore quasi liturgico. I fiati disegnano traiettorie luminose e avvolgenti, mentre la voce di Raffo Barbi guida l’ascoltatore in un crescendo emotivo, a tratti confessionale, a tratti potente e liberatorio.
“Symmetry” intreccia un soul-funk elegante e sinuoso, avvolgente come una danza ipnotica: il basso di Franz Piombino sostiene un groove moderno e pulsante, mentre la tromba e i sax emergono con raffinatezza, regalando un colore vintage che dialoga con la contemporaneità. La voce gioca con le sfumature, alternando toni morbidi e improvvise impennate di energia, accompagnata da un tappeto di tastiere che lega ogni elemento con coerenza.
Con “Sticky Situation” il sound si fa più scuro e nervoso, un blues urbano dal ritmo incalzante. Qui la chitarra trova spazio per fraseggi più aspri e taglienti, mentre l’organo Hammond e la sezione fiati costruiscono un’atmosfera densa, quasi cinematografica. La voce di Barbi si fa più sporca e teatrale, accentuando il senso di tensione e urgenza del brano.
“The Hider & the Seeker” gioca con dinamiche narrative e contrasti sonori, alternando spazi rarefatti a improvvise aperture corali che ampliano l’orizzonte emotivo del disco. Il lavoro della sezione ritmica qui è determinante: basso e batteria costruiscono un tappeto elastico su cui i fiati si appoggiano con eleganza, mentre la chitarra si muove tra arpeggi leggeri e riff incisivi.
E poi c’è “Pray For Me”, cuore pulsante dell’album: un blues lungo e sanguigno, che sembra respirare l’atmosfera densa e vibrante di quegli studi. La voce di Raffo Barbi qui raggiunge il suo apice espressivo, intensa fino a sembrare scorticata, mentre la chitarra di Pugno alterna dolci sospiri e graffi profondi, come un dialogo interiore. I Cape Horns sfiorano la perfezione, con interventi misurati ma capaci di amplificare la tensione emotiva, mentre gli assoli di Hammond e di chitarra sono semplicemente da pelle d’oca, restituendo tutta la magia di un momento irripetibile.
Chiude (Extra) Ordinary Day — che nel testo è stata poi modificata in “Down in Memphis” — mi ha colpito subito per quella sua parvenza gospel che la rende quasi una piccola marcia, come se portasse dentro il passo e l’anima della Crescent City. I fiati, sapientemente arrangiati da Maurizio Pugno, non sono mai invasivi ma aggiungono profondità e calore, arricchendo il racconto sonoro del brano e amplificando quel senso di fede e speranza che si percepisce in ogni nota. È un pezzo che chiude l’album con eleganza, lasciando una traccia di luce e di quel “sacro fango” che caratterizza l’intero viaggio musicale dei Sacromud.
Il viaggio a Memphis non è stato solo registrazione: i Sacromud hanno documentato tutto con un docufilm di prossima uscita, per raccontare anche il lato umano di questa avventura. Non solo musica, ma incontri, contraddizioni e quella consapevolezza che il sogno, a volte, può essere più vero della realtà.
The Sun Experience non è un album da archiviare dopo un tour. È un traguardo, un gesto di coraggio, una dichiarazione d’amore per il blues e la sua eredità. È la prova che i sogni, se li persegui con ostinazione, possono diventare suono e vibrare in un luogo che per molti resta solo un nome scritto nei libri di storia della musica.
Un lavoro che restituisce la magia di un sogno realizzato, ma senza perdere il contatto con la terra. C’è il fango del Mississippi e quello delle strade umbre, c’è la leggenda che si respira a ogni nota, ma anche la certezza che i Sacromud sono narratori del presente, capaci di plasmare il passato con un’urgenza narrativa che guarda al futuro. Qui non si tratta solo di blues: è un viaggio emotivo che attraversa il soul, il funk, il rock, portando con sé le contraddizioni del nostro tempo e la forza di chi sa trasformarle in arte.
Un disco da ascoltare ad occhi chiusi, per viaggiare lungo il grande fiume e lasciarsi avvolgere dall’aura di Memphis; e ad occhi aperti, per ricordarsi che ogni tanto i sogni sono davvero a portata di mano. Perché questo, in fondo, è ciò che rende The Sun Experience un’opera speciale: la capacità di parlare a chiunque abbia mai creduto che la musica possa essere il ponte tra ciò che siamo e ciò che vorremmo diventare.

From the Boot to the Mississippi: when a dream becomes sound
Some journeys begin with a plane ticket; others arise from an inner need, from a dream that grows too big to stay locked in a drawer. The one undertaken by Sacromud belongs to both categories. It starts in Gubbio and spans 8,292 kilometers with one single destination: Memphis, Tennessee. For those who love music, Memphis is more than a city—it’s a legend, a point of return, a river of notes that has shaped entire generations.
The Sun Experience is the sonic diary of this contemporary pilgrimage. It’s not just an album; it’s the snapshot of an unrepeatable moment: the first Italian band to cross the threshold of Sun Recording Studios, the sacred space where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King and Roy Orbison once recorded. Bringing their music there means not only confronting history but letting its echo flow through them and giving it a new voice in seven tracks that smell of both the Mississippi and the Umbrian Apennines.
Maurizio Pugno—guitar, arrangements and musical direction—is the soul of this sonic expedition. Alongside him are Raffo Barbi, with his powerful and intense vocals; Franz Piombino on bass; Alex Fiorucci on keyboards; Riccardo Fiorucci on drums; and the driving horns of The Cape Horns (Mirko Pugno on trumpet, Lorenzo Bisogno on tenor sax, Andrea Angeloni on trombone, Cesare Bedini on baritone sax). Together they create a sound that breathes blues, soul, rock, funk and R&B, carrying within it the noise of the journey, the scents of the great river, and the contradictions of a real and sincere America.
The seven tracks flow like chapters in a story, each with its own distinct atmosphere, milestones on a journey that begins in Gubbio and ends in the beating heart of Memphis.
It opens with “The Mule”, first heard on Resized (2021), but here reborn: the sound is warmer and more visceral, thanks to a sharp groove built on the dialogue between Pugno’s guitar and the tight rhythm section of bass and drums. The Cape Horns’ brass section brings in a soulful breath, as if it were seeping from the very walls of Sun Studios, steeped in history. Raffo Barbi’s voice is intense, raw yet controlled, capable of giving weight to every word. It feels as if the band is ferrying its identity into new waters without losing sight of its roots.
“Holy Day” is a vibrant hymn that captures the place’s spirituality, suspended between gospel reverberations and a bluesy tension running just beneath the surface. Pugno’s guitar delicately carves out phrases while Alex Fiorucci’s Hammond organ fills the sonic space with a warmth that feels almost liturgical. The horns trace bright, enveloping lines, while Barbi’s voice leads the listener through an emotional crescendo—at times confessional, at others powerful and liberating.
“Symmetry” weaves together an elegant, sinuous soul-funk, as enveloping as a hypnotic dance: Franz Piombino’s bass sustains a modern, pulsing groove, while the trumpet and saxes emerge gracefully, adding a vintage color that dialogues with contemporary vibes. The vocals play with subtle nuances, alternating soft tones with sudden bursts of energy, accompanied by a keyboard backdrop that ties every element together with coherence.
With “Sticky Situation”, the sound takes on a tighter, more urgent edge—an urban blues with a driving rhythm. Here, Pugno’s guitar offers sharper, grittier phrases, while Fiorucci’s Hammond organ and the brass section create a dense, almost cinematic atmosphere. Barbi’s voice becomes rougher and more theatrical, heightening the track’s sense of tension and urgency.
“The Hider & the Seeker” plays with narrative dynamics and sonic contrasts, alternating sparse spaces with sudden choral openings that expand the album’s emotional horizon. The rhythm section is crucial here: bass and drums build an elastic foundation on which the horns rest elegantly, while the guitar moves between delicate arpeggios and incisive riffs.
And then comes “Pray For Me”, the beating heart of the album: a long, visceral blues that seems to breathe in the dense, vibrant atmosphere of those studios. Here, Raffo Barbi’s voice reaches its expressive peak—intense, almost raw—while Pugno’s guitar alternates between gentle sighs and deep scratches, like an inner dialogue. The Cape Horns are flawless, their measured interventions amplifying the emotional tension, while the Hammond and guitar solos are utterly goosebump-inducing, capturing the magic of an unrepeatable moment.
Closing the album is (Extra) Ordinary Day—later adapted in the lyrics as “Down in Memphis”—a track that struck me instantly with its gospel overtones, making it feel almost like a small march carrying the step and soul of the Crescent City within it. The horns, expertly arranged by Pugno, never overpower but instead add depth and warmth, enriching the song’s sonic storytelling and amplifying the sense of faith and hope that pervades every note. It’s a piece that ends the record with elegance, leaving a trace of light and that “sacred mud” which defines Sacromud’s entire musical journey.
Their trip to Memphis wasn’t just about recording: Sacromud documented everything with a forthcoming docufilm, aiming to capture not only the music but also the human side of this adventure. Not just music, but encounters, contradictions, and the realization that sometimes a dream can feel more real than reality itself.
The Sun Experience is not an album to shelve after a tour. It’s a milestone, an act of courage, a love letter to the blues and its legacy.
