Un album che pulsa di energia e libertà creativa, tra fusion, jazz e rock
Ci sono dischi che non ti lasciano scampo: ti catturano subito, perché dietro le note percepisci una visione precisa, una libertà assoluta. Quando ho ascoltato Groove First la prima volta, ho avuto la sensazione che Lorenzo Feliciati (bassista e compositore) stesse raccontando qualcosa che andava oltre la tecnica, oltre le etichette di genere. È un disco che pulsa, che respira, che ti invita a seguirlo in territori sempre nuovi. E il basso – strumento che per molti è solo accompagnamento – qui diventa la colonna vertebrale di un universo sonoro in continua espansione.
Groove First, ottavo capitolo della sua discografia solista, è un album che va ben oltre la somma delle sue tracce: è un manifesto di libertà creativa, un omaggio sincero alla batteria e ai batteristi che hanno scandito la sua vita musicale.
Sin dalle prime note ci si trova immersi in un mondo in cui groove e melodia si rincorrono senza sosta. Feliciati non ha paura di sperimentare, ma lo fa con la sicurezza di chi ha alle spalle anni di esplorazioni sonore tra progressive rock, nu jazz e fusion. I bassi pulsanti sono la sua firma inconfondibile, ma qui c’è molto di più: pathos, armonie ricche, ritmi che ti portano lontano.
Ogni brano è costruito intorno a un batterista diverso, creando un mosaico di stili e sensibilità. Dalla power fusion esplosiva di Gergo Borlai al jazz elettrico di Maxx Furian, dal groove funk di Jason JT Thomas (accompagnato dalle percussioni di Martin Verdonk) al drumming poetico di Roberto Gualdi, fino al rock futuristico di Gianluca Palmieri. Feliciati gioca con queste diverse personalità, lasciando che la batteria diventi protagonista senza mai perdere il controllo della narrazione musicale.
Tra gli ospiti spicca il nome di Pat Mastelotto, batterista statunitense (King Crimson, O.R.k.), compagno di tante avventure artistiche, che qui contribuisce con il suo tocco unico in due brani: Good Goods! (un dialogo prezioso con Feliciati) e Force Quit, arricchito dai fiati della Koi horn section.
Non mancano altri compagni di viaggio che aggiungono sfumature inaspettate: la chitarra raffinata di Richard Hallebeek in Morning Wow, quella di Davide Aru in Next #2, il piano elettronico di Alessandro Gwis in Oslo e il coro Flowing Chords diretto da Margherita Flore che chiude l’album con un’eco corale in Lights.
Groove First è un lavoro maturo, denso di suggestioni e dettagli che emergono ascolto dopo ascolto. Lorenzo Feliciati si conferma non solo come uno dei bassisti più creativi e riconoscibili del panorama contemporaneo, ma anche come compositore, arrangiatore e produttore capace di dare forma a universi sonori complessi e, al tempo stesso, accessibili.
Un disco che non si limita a mettere il groove al primo posto, ma lo trasforma in un linguaggio universale, capace di parlare a chiunque sia disposto a lasciarsi trasportare. Un viaggio sonoro che unisce tecnica e sensibilità, in cui ogni brano diventa un dialogo tra strumenti, spazi e silenzi. Groove First è un invito ad ascoltare con il corpo e con la mente, a lasciarsi sorprendere dalle infinite sfumature di un artista che continua a reinventarsi senza mai perdere la sua identità.

There are records that leave you no escape: they capture you instantly because behind the notes you sense a clear vision, an absolute freedom. When I first listened to Groove First, I felt Lorenzo Feliciati (bassist and composer) was telling a story that went beyond technique, beyond genre labels. It’s a record that pulses, that breathes, that invites you to follow it into ever-new territories. And the bass – an instrument that for many is mere accompaniment – here becomes the backbone of an ever-expanding sonic universe.
Groove First, the eighth chapter in his solo discography, is an album that goes far beyond the sum of its parts: it’s a manifesto of creative freedom, a heartfelt tribute to the drums and the drummers who have marked Feliciati’s musical life.
From the very first notes, you’re immersed in a world where groove and melody chase each other relentlessly. Feliciati isn’t afraid to experiment, but he does so with the confidence of someone who has spent years exploring soundscapes between progressive rock, nu jazz and fusion. His pulsating basslines are unmistakable, but there’s much more here: pathos, rich harmonies, and rhythms that carry you far.
Each track is built around a different drummer, creating a mosaic of styles and sensibilities. From the explosive power fusion of Gergo Borlai to the electric jazz of Maxx Furian, from the funk groove of Jason JT Thomas (joined by the percussion of Martin Verdonk) to the poetic drumming of Roberto Gualdi, and the futuristic rock of Gianluca Palmieri. Feliciati plays with these different personalities, letting the drums take center stage while never losing control of the musical narrative.
Among the guests, the name of Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, O.R.k.) stands out. A long-time artistic companion of Feliciati, Mastelotto contributes his unique touch to two tracks: Good Goods! (a precious dialogue with Feliciati) and Force Quit, enriched by the vibrant brass of the Koi Horn Section.
Other fellow travelers add unexpected nuances: Richard Hallebeek’s refined guitar in Morning Wow, Davide Aru’s warm strings in Next #2, Alessandro Gwis’ electronic piano in Oslo, and the Flowing Chords choir directed by Margherita Flore closing the album with a choral echo in Lights.
Groove First is a mature work, rich in suggestions and details that reveal themselves listen after listen. Lorenzo Feliciati proves himself not only as one of the most creative and distinctive bassists on today’s scene, but also as a composer, arranger and producer capable of shaping complex and yet accessible sound worlds.
This is not simply an album that puts groove first: it transforms groove into a universal language, able to speak to anyone willing to let themselves be carried away. A sonic journey that combines technique and sensitivity, where each track becomes a dialogue between instruments, spaces and silences.
