Alex Mari – Origins (2026): Melodic Metal, Progressive e AOR

Alex Mari – Origins

Alex Mari – Origins (Lethal Song / Atomic Stuff Promotion, 2026)

I temi affrontati comprendono memoria, identità, perdita, cambiamento e rinascita.

Alex Mari – Origins (Lethal Song / Atomic Stuff Promotion, 2026)

The roots of the past become new emotions

Origins is the first solo album by Alex Mari, an Italian singer, songwriter and musician also known for his work with Night Pleasure Hotel and Barock Project. Released independently in digital format on October 9, 2026, the album stems from a desire to revisit some of the earliest songs he wrote between the late 1990s and the early 2000s, when he was a member of O.D.U. and Ophiura.

Some of these tracks had already appeared on Ophiura's 2007 EP Ancestral Whispers, while others had remained part of the band's live repertoire or had never received an official release. However, Origins is more than a way of bringing this material back to life: the songs have been rearranged, re-recorded and reinterpreted through a musical sensibility shaped by years of experience.

The title reflects this relationship between past and present. Rather than simply looking back, the album revisits compositions born during an earlier stage of life, giving them a new sonic identity through artistic and production possibilities that were not available at the time.

Musically, the album moves within the realm of melodic metal, with progressive rock influences, accessible melodies and arrangements that emphasize its cinematic character. Rock and metal foundations meet orchestral elements, keyboards and evocative atmospheres, while vocals and melodies remain at the heart of the compositions. The songs often unfold like scenes in a story, alternating between more powerful passages and introspective, atmospheric moments.

The themes explored include memory, identity, loss, change and rebirth. The atmosphere sometimes takes on darker, spiritual shades, accompanying a journey in which past experiences are viewed from a different perspective. The result is an album that preserves the emotional core of the original compositions while giving them a renewed musical identity.

The journey begins with Back To The Origins Pt. 1, a brief instrumental passage built around keyboards that gradually introduces the album's atmosphere. Letters From Hell immediately shifts the mood, with aggressive guitars, a driving rhythm section and a distinctly hard and heavy sound. Here, Alex Mari demonstrates his vocal versatility, moving from a controlled delivery to more intense passages while exploring the darker corners of the human soul and the struggle to break free from inner turmoil.

With Resurrection, the album's first single, melody meets a distinctly hard rock structure, driven by energetic rhythms and instrumental passages that give the song momentum and punch. The lyrics focus on personal rebirth, exploring the strength required to overcome setbacks, endure difficult times and find the courage to start again with a renewed sense of awareness.

Aenigma stands out for its carefully crafted arrangement, in which keyboards and guitars build an intricate musical framework before opening into a melodic, engaging chorus. The song explores the mystery of existence and the human need to find answers to life's great questions, without attempting to resolve every uncertainty. It reflects on the doubts that accompany the search for truth and the fascination of what remains unexplained.

The third single, Ancestral Whispers, slows the pace with an intense ballad built around keyboards and arpeggiated guitars. The vocal duet with Leonardo “Big Leo” adds another dimension to a song inspired by Brian Weiss's book Many Lives, Many Masters. At its heart lies the idea of souls bound by a profound connection, destined to find one another across different eras and lifetimes.

With Let Our Dreams Be Free, a more melodic and accessible side emerges, supported by AOR influences and arrangements in which keyboards play a prominent role. The song conveys a message of freedom and confidence in one's own desires, encouraging listeners to believe in their abilities and pursue what truly matters to them without giving up on their dreams.

In True Illusion, the tension gradually builds. An intimate opening develops into an increasingly powerful musical passage, culminating in an energetic section where guitars and keyboards combine in a rich, dynamic arrangement. The song explores the danger of confusing what we want to see with what is actually before us, reflecting on the masks people may hide behind and the disappointments that arise from expectations built on appearances.

Among the album's most elaborate moments is Visions, where its progressive character emerges through shifts in atmosphere and symphonic arrangements. Valentina Piccinini's vocal contribution enriches the track and helps shape its distinctive character. Dreams and visions become a way of exploring the inner self, bringing to light desires and fears that often remain hidden in everyday life.

With Forgotten, the album returns to more intimate and melancholic territory. Piano and vocals guide the opening section before the music gradually builds in intensity, leading to a rock passage featuring a poignant guitar solo. The song deals with abandonment and the feeling of having been forgotten by people or places that once provided a sense of belonging.

I Am stands out for its energetic, direct approach, driven by an incisive rhythm and a forceful vocal performance. The lyrics express a determination to affirm one's identity, embracing personal strengths, flaws and life experiences without seeking external approval. It is an invitation to remain true to oneself and find the strength to move forward in one's own story.

The atmosphere becomes darker and more epic with Apocalypse, featuring heavy riffs, imposing orchestral arrangements and dramatic vocals. The song addresses the contradictions of contemporary society and emotional isolation, evoking the collapse of a compromised order as a possible step towards rebuilding something more authentic.

Back To The Origins Pt. 2 brings the album full circle, echoing the ideas introduced in the opening track and concluding the journey with an instrumental composition shaped by symphonic influences. The return to the opening themes gives the album a circular structure, bringing together the different musical elements encountered throughout the tracklist.

The album concludes with the bonus track Sospiri Ancestrali, an acoustic Italian-language version of Ancestral Whispers, featuring Gianluca “Mr. Pisu” Pisana on vocals. This new arrangement highlights the song's intimate character while preserving its theme of souls connected across different lifetimes, now expressed through the musicality of the Italian language. It is a delicate closing moment that presents one of the project's central songs from a different perspective.

On Origins, Alex Mari handles vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, programming and arrangements. Drums are performed by Paolo Caridi, who has worked with Michele Luppi, Reb Beach and Ellefson-Soto, and Gianluca “Mr. Pisu” Pisana of Night Pleasure Hotel, who also contributes vocals to the bonus track Sospiri Ancestrali. The album also features Igor Gallerani on keyboards on Resurrection, Valentina Piccinini in a vocal duet on Visions, Leonardo “Big Leo” in a vocal duet on Ancestral Whispers, and Lisa Cavalieri D’Oro, whose vocal textures enrich Forgotten.

Mixing and mastering were handled by Roberto Priori at Pri Studio in Bologna. His work includes projects with artists and bands such as Danger Zone, Wheels Of Fire, Raintimes and Michele Luppi.

With Origins, Alex Mari embarks on a musical journey that begins with his roots and leads towards a new artistic awareness. Songs written many years ago find new life through renewed arrangements, sounds ranging from melodic metal to progressive rock, and a strong focus on melody and emotional expression. Each track adds another piece to a journey shaped by vulnerability, self-discovery, loss and rebirth, while keeping alive the power of dreams and the possibility of starting over.

What makes this album particularly meaningful is its relationship with time. These compositions belong to an earlier chapter, yet they are not trapped in the past. They are revisited through the eyes of someone who has gathered new experiences and discovered different ways to express what he felt back then. Returning to one's origins does not necessarily mean going backwards; it means reconnecting with a part of oneself and allowing it to grow. This is the deeper meaning of Origins, a personal work in which Alex Mari brings past and present together, transforming the traces of his musical journey into a new beginning.
