Chris Horses & The Slow Smoke – Nowhere Bound (2026): Southern Rock e Country Rock dall’Italia

Chris Horses & The Slow Smoke - Nowhere Bound

Chris Horses & The Slow Smoke - Nowhere Bound (Devil’s Fork Records, 2026)

Rock americano, anima italiana

White flag cambia subito atmosfera. Rocks On The Street, uscito come singolo, rallenta nuovamente e porta in primo piano il lato country.

Chris Horses & The Slow Smoke

 English version

Chris Horses & The Slow Smoke - Nowhere Bound (Devil’s Fork Records, 2026)

 American rock, Italian soul

Some albums seem to come from a very specific place from the very first few minutes. Nowhere Bound is one of them. All it takes is following the guitars, the voice of Chris Horses, and the band’s direct approach to songwriting to find yourself in a musical landscape that clearly looks towards the United States. And yet Chris Horses & The Slow Smoke are an Italian quartet.

That is one of the things I particularly like about this album: it does not try to hide its influences. American rock is clearly at its core, but it never comes all at once. Southern rock, country rock, Americana, blues and folk appear in different shades across the nine tracks, giving the album an enjoyable and varied flow.

Nowhere Bound is the first album by Chris Horses & The Slow Smoke, following Sad Songs & Dark Beer, released in 2024 by Devil’s Fork Records under the name Chris Horses. From the very beginning, it is clear that the band is primarily focused on the songs.

At the heart of the group is Chris Horses, aka Cristian Secco, on lead vocals and electric and acoustic guitars, joined by Gianluca Zanibellato on electric guitar and banjo, Andrea Vanacore on bass, and Federico Patarnello on drums. The three musicians also contribute backing vocals, while several guests appear on the album, including Daniela Boem, who provides vocals on The Party’s Gone, and Ellen River, whose voice can be heard on Shine Or Rain and Feel It Coming.

The album opens with Slosmo, a title taken from the abbreviation of Slow Smoke. It begins with acoustic guitars and a calm vocal delivery. Drums, bass and electric guitars gradually enter, giving the track more weight without losing its intimate character.

White changes the mood immediately. The pace becomes more energetic, with the guitar taking centre stage in a solo during the second half. Rocks On The Street, released as a single, slows things down again and brings the country side of the band further to the forefront. With If I Broke Your Heart comes one of the album’s most immediate tracks, driven by a subtle blues feel and a catchy vocal refrain that makes the song particularly engaging. It is a straightforward, direct song that gets into the listener’s head without needing anything more.

Then comes Cheeserolling, with the banjo adding another colour to the album. It is an upbeat track with a strong country and folk character, followed by The Party’s Gone, which shifts the pace once again. Daniela Boem’s voice fits naturally into the song, while the arrangement keeps its lively, driving feel.

Shine Or Rain returns to country sounds, while Feel It Coming takes the band towards a more pronounced Southern rock feel. On both tracks, the warm voice of Emilia-born singer-songwriter Ellen River blends with Chris Horses’ vocals, while the guitars help shape the change in atmosphere.

The closing track, Goddamn Love Song, changes direction once again. A deep bass line introduces a more intimate rock ballad, giving the album a different kind of ending after the energy of some of the previous tracks. Listening to Nowhere Bound, it is easy to hear a strong connection with American rock and with the sounds that have crossed paths with country, Southern rock, blues and folk over the years. Chris Horses & The Slow Smoke take these elements and make them their own, creating an album that is direct, spontaneous and enjoyable to listen to.

The mastering, carried out by Jono Manson at The Kitchen Sink Studio in Santa Fe, Texas, also seems to complete this connection with the American musical tradition. But in the end, the most important thing is the music itself: nine songs that do not need grand statements to work.

Nowhere Bound leaves me with the feeling of a sincere album, made without forcing anything and with a clear preference for this way of approaching rock. Chris Horses & The Slow Smoke give their songs a recognisable character, moving naturally between quieter moments and others that immediately bring the music to life. A direct and enjoyable album that conveys the band’s musical identity with genuine ease.
