Tra jazz elettrico e fusion, visioni sonore metropolitane
Pubblicato il 25 febbraio di quest’anno dall’etichetta Dodicilune e distribuito da IRD e Believe Digital, Metropolitan Views è il nuovo lavoro discografico del trombettista e compositore Nicola Meneghini, musicista vicentino che da anni si muove tra scrittura, arrangiamento e attività concertistica in ambito jazz e non solo.
Il disco nasce all’interno del progetto Synergika, quintetto stabile fondato nel 2019, il cui nome suggerisce già la direzione estetica del gruppo: un suono costruito sull’interazione e sull’equilibrio tra i musicisti, più che sull’esposizione individuale.
Accanto a Meneghini troviamo Fabio Pavan al sax tenore, Samuele Donadio al piano elettrico e tastiere, Christian Guidolin al basso elettrico e Gabriele Grotto alla batteria e percussioni. È una formazione che si muove tra jazz elettrico e fusion, con grande attenzione agli arrangiamenti e al modo in cui i musicisti costruiscono insieme il suono.
Uno degli aspetti più interessanti di Metropolitan Views è proprio il modo in cui i brani prendono forma all’interno del gruppo, crescendo grazie al dialogo continuo tra i musicisti.
L’album si apre con Improvisation, un brano nato da un momento di creazione condivisa. Il quintetto suona con grande libertà, lasciando che siano l’ascolto e le reazioni tra i musicisti a far crescere la musica. Tromba e sax fanno emergere piano alcune linee melodiche, mentre tastiere, basso e batteria creano un suono in continuo movimento, con piccoli cambi di ritmo e colore.
Con Promenade la musica assume una forma più definita, ma resta scorrevole. Il ritmo ha un andamento morbido, quasi come una passeggiata che attraversa diversi scorci urbani. Il piano elettrico di Donadio apre lo spazio armonico con sonorità luminose, mentre la tromba di Meneghini e il sax tenore di Pavan si muovono in dialogo, intrecciando frasi brevi e naturali.
Il lato più melodico della scrittura emerge in Giusy Theme, costruito attorno a un tema chiaro e cantabile. Il gruppo lo accompagna con equilibrio e delicatezza: il sax si inserisce con eleganza nel tessuto del brano, mentre il piano elettrico arricchisce il suono con sfumature morbide e avvolgenti.
L’atmosfera cambia con Suspense, più tesa e sospesa. Armonie aperte e piccoli movimenti ritmici creano un fondale stabile ma vivo, mentre la tromba di Meneghini disegna linee incisive sopra il basso di Guidolin e la batteria di Grotto.
In Remember Chick emerge un omaggio a Chick Corea. Più che richiamarne direttamente lo stile, il quintetto ne raccoglie lo spirito creativo e l’energia della fusion. Il piano elettrico assume un ruolo centrale con sonorità che portano direttamente verso il jazz elettrico, mentre la tromba mantiene un fraseggio limpido e misurato.
Con Solar Requiem il clima diventa più raccolto e meditativo. La musica rallenta, gli accordi vengono lasciati respirare e la sezione ritmica si muove con discrezione. I fiati disegnano linee essenziali, lasciando spazio ai silenzi e creando un’atmosfera sospesa.
Un momento particolarmente elegante arriva con Pavane Jazz, brano che richiama la grazia delle antiche danze europee, ma filtrata attraverso il jazz contemporaneo. Il quintetto cura con attenzione dinamiche e colori sonori, creando un’atmosfera raffinata che ricorda certe colonne sonore evocative, intensa e ben bilanciata.
La chiusura con New Piece riporta il disco verso una dimensione più aperta. I musicisti si muovono con grande libertà e l’interplay diventa il vero motore della musica. Le idee passano da uno strumento all’altro con naturalezza, lasciando la sensazione che il percorso non si concluda davvero, ma resti aperto a nuove direzioni.

Nel complesso Metropolitan Views lascia la sensazione di un viaggio dentro paesaggi urbani osservati con sguardo attento e sensibile. Le composizioni di Nicola Meneghini trovano nel dialogo con i musicisti dei Synergika una dimensione viva, in cui ogni intervento contribuisce a definire il carattere del suono. Non è un disco costruito sull’effetto o sulla dimostrazione tecnica, ma su un equilibrio paziente tra scrittura, ascolto e libertà improvvisativa.
Alla fine dell’ascolto rimane soprattutto l’impressione di una musica che respira con naturalezza: tromba e sax che si cercano, tastiere che ampliano lo spazio armonico, basso e batteria che sostengono il movimento senza mai appesantirlo. È proprio questa dimensione collettiva a rendere il progetto convincente, trasformando ogni brano in una piccola scena sonora che continua a muoversi anche dopo l’ultima nota. Metropolitan Views non chiude davvero il suo percorso: sembra piuttosto lasciare una porta aperta verso nuove possibilità, come una città che non smette mai di cambiare.

Released on February 25 this year by Dodicilune and distributed by IRD and Believe Digital, Metropolitan Views is the new album by trumpeter and composer Nicola Meneghini, a musician from Vicenza who has long worked between composition, arranging, and performing in jazz and beyond. The album was created within the Synergika project, a stable quintet founded in 2019, whose name already hints at the group’s aesthetic direction: a sound built on interaction and balance between the musicians, rather than on individual display.
Alongside Meneghini are Fabio Pavan on tenor sax, Samuele Donadio on electric piano and keyboards, Christian Guidolin on electric bass, and Gabriele Grotto on drums and percussion. The group moves between electric jazz and fusion, paying close attention to arrangements and the way the musicians shape the sound together.
One of the most interesting aspects of Metropolitan Views is how the pieces take shape within the group, growing through continuous dialogue between the musicians.
The album opens with Improvisation, a piece born from a shared creative moment. The quintet plays with freedom, letting listening and spontaneous reactions guide the music. Trumpet and sax slowly bring out melodic lines, while keyboards, bass, and drums create a constantly moving sound with subtle changes in rhythm and tone.
With Promenade, the music becomes more defined yet remains flowing. The rhythm moves gently, like a walk through different urban scenes. Donadio’s electric piano opens the harmonic space with bright tones, while Meneghini’s trumpet and Pavan’s tenor sax converse, weaving short, natural phrases.
The more melodic side of the writing emerges in Giusy Theme, built around a clear, singable theme. The group supports it with balance and delicacy: the sax integrates elegantly into the texture, while the electric piano enriches the sound with soft, enveloping colors.
The atmosphere shifts with Suspense, tense and suspended. Open harmonies and small rhythmic movements create a steady but lively foundation, while Meneghini’s trumpet draws incisive lines over Guidolin’s bass and Grotto’s drums.
In Remember Chick, an homage to Chick Corea emerges. Rather than directly imitating his style, the quintet captures his creative spirit and the energy of fusion. The electric piano takes a central role with sounds that evoke electric jazz, while the trumpet maintains a clear, measured phrasing.
With Solar Requiem, the mood becomes more introspective and meditative. The music slows, chords are allowed to breathe, and the rhythm section moves discreetly. The horns trace essential lines, leaving space for silence and creating a suspended atmosphere.
A particularly elegant moment comes with Pavane Jazz, a piece that evokes the grace of old European dances, filtered through contemporary jazz. The quintet carefully shapes dynamics and tonal colors, creating a refined atmosphere reminiscent of evocative film soundtracks, intense and well balanced.
The closing New Piece brings the album into a more open, exploratory space. The musicians move freely, and interplay becomes the true engine of the music. Ideas pass naturally from one instrument to another, leaving the impression that the journey is not truly over, but open to new directions.
Overall, Metropolitan Views feels like a journey through urban landscapes observed with a sensitive, attentive eye. Meneghini’s compositions find a living dimension in dialogue with the Synergika musicians, where every contribution helps define the character of the sound. It is not an album built on effect or technical display, but on a patient balance between composition, listening, and improvisational freedom.
At the end of the listening experience, what remains most strongly is the sense of music breathing naturally: trumpet and sax searching for each other, keyboards expanding the harmonic space, bass and drums supporting the motion without weighing it down. This collective dimension makes the project convincing, turning each piece into a small sonic scene that continues to move even after the final note. Metropolitan Views does not close its journey; rather, it seems to leave the door open to new possibilities, like a city that never stops changing.
