Voce e strumenti si intrecciano in otto attimi di intensità
Con Duetz, la cantante e compositrice bolognese Valentina Mattarozzi propone un lavoro che fin dal primo ascolto rivela un’idea chiara e molto personale: costruire ogni brano come un incontro diretto tra la voce e un solo strumento. Pubblicato dall’etichetta Azzurra Music, l’album si sviluppa proprio attorno a questa scelta essenziale, che riduce l’impianto musicale al minimo necessario per lasciare spazio al dialogo tra i timbri e alla sensibilità interpretativa dei musicisti coinvolti.
L’impressione è quella di trovarsi davanti a una serie di conversazioni musicali, intime e misurate, in cui la voce si muove con naturalezza accanto agli strumenti, senza forzature. È proprio questa dimensione raccolta a dare forma al disco: un lavoro che punta sull’ascolto reciproco e sull’equilibrio tra le parti, lasciando emergere con delicatezza le sfumature emotive dei brani e il carattere di ogni incontro sonoro.
Il disco si sviluppa attraverso otto brani: la maggior parte sono riletture di standard che fanno parte della memoria del jazz, mentre When She Remembers è l’unico momento completamente originale, scritto dalla stessa Valentina Mattarozzi.
Anche il titolo Duetz nasce da questa idea di incontro: un gioco sonoro tra “duet” e “jazz” che racconta bene la natura del progetto. Più che una semplice sequenza di brani, l’album sembra costruito come una serie di piccoli incontri musicali, ognuno con un colore diverso, dove la voce e lo strumento si cercano, si ascoltano e trovano di volta in volta un equilibrio nuovo.
Il percorso si apre con The Very Thought of You di Ray Noble, interpretata insieme al pianoforte e alle tastiere di Teo Ciavarella, figura importante nel cammino artistico della cantante e a cui l’album è dedicato. L’atmosfera è subito raccolta e delicata, quasi una conversazione musicale a bassa voce.
Con A Night in Tunisia di Dizzy Gillespie il dialogo cambia prospettiva e si sviluppa con la batteria di Lele Barbieri, creando un confronto più ritmico e diretto.
In ’Round Midnight, la celebre composizione di Thelonious Monk, la voce si intreccia invece con il sax tenore di Daniele Scannapieco, mentre All The Things You Are di Jerome Kern trova una dimensione particolarmente essenziale accanto al contrabbasso di Felice Del Gaudio.
Il momento più personale arriva con When She Remembers, accompagnata dalla chitarra di Giampiero Martirani, un brano che mantiene la stessa atmosfera intima del resto del disco e mette in luce anche il lato compositivo della cantante.
Il viaggio prosegue con Misty di Erroll Garner insieme al vibrafono di Giovanni Perin, con Come Rain or Come Shine di Harold Arlen e Johnny Mercer accanto al trombone di Checco Coniglio e con The Look of Love di Burt Bacharach, impreziosita dalla fisarmonica di Massimo Tagliata.

Ascoltando Duetz emerge con chiarezza la volontà di mettere al centro l’emozione e il rapporto tra i musicisti, lasciando da parte qualsiasi costruzione troppo complessa. La voce di Valentina Mattarozzi si muove con naturalezza, senza cercare effetti spettacolari, ma affidandosi a un fraseggio elegante e comunicativo che trova ogni volta un equilibrio diverso con lo strumento che la accompagna. Ogni brano diventa così una piccola scena musicale autonoma, fatta di respiri, attese e sfumature: a tratti più malinconiche, in altri momenti più luminose.
Nel suo insieme questo ottimo lavoro lascia la sensazione di un lavoro profondamente sincero, quasi confidenziale. Un disco che non alza mai la voce, ma che proprio nella sua misura riesce a trasmettere molto: un ascolto fatto di dettagli, di silenzi e di incontri musicali che sembrano nascere nel momento stesso in cui prendono forma. È un omaggio alla tradizione jazz, ma soprattutto un invito ad avvicinarsi alla musica con attenzione e sensibilità, lasciandosi guidare da quella semplicità che, a volte, riesce a raccontare più di qualsiasi virtuosismo.

Voices and instruments intertwine in eight moments of intensity
With Duetz, the Bolognese singer and composer Valentina Mattarozzi presents a work that from the very first listen reveals a clear and deeply personal idea: building each piece as a direct encounter between the voice and a single instrument. Released by the label Azzurra Music, the album develops precisely around this essential choice, reducing the musical framework to the minimum necessary in order to leave space for the dialogue between timbres and the interpretative sensitivity of the musicians involved.
The impression is that of being in front of a series of musical conversations, intimate and measured, where the voice moves naturally alongside the instruments, without any strain. It is exactly this collected dimension that shapes the album: a work that focuses on mutual listening and balance between the parts, gently allowing the emotional nuances of the pieces and the character of each musical encounter to emerge.
The record unfolds through eight tracks: most of them are reinterpretations of standards that belong to the shared memory of jazz, while When She Remembers is the only completely original piece, written by Valentina Mattarozzi herself.
Even the title Duetz grows out of this idea of encounter: a playful sound blend between “duet” and “jazz” that clearly reflects the nature of the project. More than a simple sequence of songs, the album feels like a collection of small musical meetings, each with its own color, where voice and instrument search for each other, listen to one another and find a new balance every time.
The journey opens with The Very Thought of You by Ray Noble, performed together with the piano and keyboards of Teo Ciavarella, an important figure in the singer’s artistic path and to whom the album is dedicated. The atmosphere is immediately intimate and delicate, almost like a quiet musical conversation.
With A Night in Tunisia by Dizzy Gillespie, the dialogue changes perspective and develops with the drums of Lele Barbieri, creating a more rhythmic and direct interaction.
In ’Round Midnight, the celebrated composition by Thelonious Monk, the voice intertwines with the tenor saxophone of Daniele Scannapieco, while All The Things You Are by Jerome Kern finds a particularly essential dimension alongside the double bass of Felice Del Gaudio.

The voice of Valentina Mattarozzi moves naturally, without seeking spectacular effects, relying instead on an elegant and communicative phrasing that finds a different balance each time with the accompanying instrument. Each track thus becomes a small autonomous musical scene, made of breaths, pauses and nuances: at times more melancholic, at others brighter.
Taken as a whole, this excellent work leaves the feeling of something deeply sincere, almost confidential. It is a record that never raises its voice, yet precisely through its restraint manages to convey a great deal: a listening experience made of details, silences and musical encounters that seem to arise in the very moment they take shape. It is a tribute to the jazz tradition, but above all an invitation to approach music with attention and sensitivity, letting oneself be guided by that simplicity which, at times, can say more than any display of virtuosity.
