Un equilibrio fragile tra struttura e libertà, dove l’elettricità parla
C’è un momento, ascoltando Nu Breed, in cui si ha la sensazione che tutto possa ancora cambiare direzione. Ed è proprio lì che il disco prende forma: in quell’equilibrio instabile tra controllo e apertura, tra scrittura e improvvisazione. Il nuovo lavoro dello Xavi Reija Electric Quintet, pubblicato il 30 marzo di quest’anno per MoonJune Records, si muove dentro il territorio del jazz elettrico progressivo con un’urgenza espressiva che non cerca compromessi.
Il disco si muove nel jazz elettrico contemporaneo, con uno sguardo aperto verso sonorità più progressive. Le composizioni e l’improvvisazione si intrecciano in modo naturale, dando vita a una musica dinamica, costruita sul ritmo, sul suono e su un forte lavoro di gruppo, sempre in evoluzione.
Xavi Reija, batterista e compositore catalano, costruisce un suono che ha radici riconoscibili ma che non si chiude mai in riferimenti espliciti. Piuttosto, sviluppa un linguaggio personale, in cui l’energia elettrica e la libertà espressiva diventano elementi centrali, dando forma a una musica in continua trasformazione.
La prima cosa che colpisce è il modo in cui gli strumenti occupano lo spazio. La batteria di Reija non è solo motore ritmico, ma una presenza costante, quasi narrativa, capace di spingere e trattenere allo stesso tempo. Intorno, il quintetto costruisce un linguaggio compatto e allo stesso tempo mobile.
Il sax di Rafael Garcés si muove tra aperture liriche e improvvise accelerazioni, mentre la chitarra elettrica di Dušan Jevtovic lavora spesso per fratture, inserendosi con linee taglienti e nervose. Tomàs Fosch, tra Fender Rhodes e Mini Moog, aggiunge profondità e una dimensione più atmosferica, senza mai perdere il contatto con l’energia del gruppo. Il basso elettrico di Bernat Hernández tiene insieme tutto con un suono pieno, spesso pulsante, che rende il tessuto musicale ancora più denso.
Il percorso si apre con Dream Land, che introduce subito una dimensione sospesa e avvolgente, come un punto di partenza in cui il quintetto costruisce lentamente il proprio spazio sonoro. Con Dusan Song emerge con maggiore chiarezza la voce della chitarra di Dušan Jevtovic, che guida il discorso tra aperture liriche e fratture improvvise, mantenendo vivo il dialogo con la band.
La title track Nu Breed concentra l’energia del progetto: la componente elettrica si fa più evidente e il quintetto suona con grande compattezza, in uno dei momenti più intensi del disco. Reflections riduce la densità e porta l’ascolto verso una dimensione più raccolta, fatta di dettagli e di un dialogo più misurato.
Con Dreamscape Room si torna a una dimensione sospesa, quasi mentale, in cui il gruppo prende forma per stratificazioni successive. We Keep Walking introduce invece una spinta continua, quasi ostinata, con la ritmica che costruisce un movimento costante e gli altri strumenti impegnati in variazioni.
Are You Religious? porta la tensione su un piano più acceso, con un dialogo serrato e un suono che si muove per contrasti, senza una direzione definita. Infine, Two Sides chiude il disco muovendosi tra poli opposti, tra densità e rarefazione, lasciando una sensazione di apertura coerente con l’intero percorso.

Le composizioni di Reija funzionano come punti di partenza più che come strutture chiuse. Anche quando la scrittura sembra definire un percorso preciso, c’è sempre uno spazio che si apre per l’interazione collettiva.
Questo rende l’ascolto dinamico, a tratti imprevedibile. Non ci sono momenti pensati per essere immediati: ogni passaggio richiede attenzione, ma in cambio offre una quantità di dettagli che emergono soprattutto negli ascolti successivi.
Nu Breed è un disco che non cerca scorciatoie. Richiede tempo, disponibilità e attenzione, ma restituisce un’esperienza intensa, fatta di tensioni, aperture e continui spostamenti di prospettiva.
È il tipo di lavoro che non si esaurisce in un primo ascolto, ma continua a rivelarsi poco alla volta, lasciando la sensazione di trovarsi davanti a una musica viva, in costante mutazione.

A fragile balance between structure and freedom, where electricity speaks
There is a moment, while listening to Nu Breed, when it feels like everything can still change direction. And it is precisely there that the album takes shape: in that unstable balance between control and openness, between composition and improvisation. The new work by the Xavi Reija Electric Quintet, released on March 30 this year via MoonJune Records, moves within the realm of progressive electric jazz with an expressive urgency that leaves no room for compromise.
The album sits within contemporary electric jazz, with an open взгляд toward more progressive sounds. Composition and improvisation intertwine naturally, giving life to dynamic music built on rhythm, sound, and strong group interplay, always evolving.
Xavi Reija, a Catalan drummer and composer, builds a sound with recognizable roots that never settles into explicit references. Instead, he develops a personal language in which electric energy and expressive freedom become central elements, shaping a music in constant transformation.
The first thing that strikes the listener is how the instruments occupy space. Reija’s drums are not just a rhythmic engine, but a constant, almost narrative presence, capable of pushing and holding at the same time. Around this, the quintet builds a language that is both compact and fluid.
Rafael Garcés’ saxophone moves between lyrical openings and sudden accelerations, while Dušan Jevtovic’s electric guitar often works through fractures, inserting sharp and restless lines. Tomàs Fosch, on Fender Rhodes and Mini Moog, adds depth and a more atmospheric dimension, never losing contact with the group’s energy. Bernat Hernández’s electric bass holds everything together with a full, often pulsating sound, making the musical fabric even denser.
The journey opens with Dream Land, which immediately introduces a suspended, enveloping dimension, like a starting point where the quintet slowly builds its sonic space. With Dusan Song, the voice of Dušan Jevtovic’s guitar emerges more clearly, guiding the discourse between lyrical openings and sudden breaks, keeping the dialogue with the band alive.
The title track Nu Breed concentrates the project’s energy: the electric component becomes more evident, and the quintet plays with great cohesion, in one of the album’s most intense moments. Reflections reduces the density and shifts the listening toward a more intimate space, built on detail and a more measured dialogue.
With Dreamscape Room, the music returns to a suspended, almost mental dimension, where the group takes shape through successive layers. We Keep Walking introduces a continuous, almost insistent drive, with the rhythm section building a steady motion while the other instruments explore variations.
Are You Religious? pushes the tension into a more intense space, with a tight dialogue and a sound moving through contrasts, without a fixed direction. Finally, Two Sides closes the album by moving between opposite poles—density and sparsity—leaving a sense of openness that reflects the entire journey.
Reija’s compositions work as starting points rather than closed structures. Even when the writing seems to define a clear path, there is always space for collective interaction to emerge.
This makes the listening experience dynamic and at times unpredictable. There are no moments designed to be immediate: every passage demands attention, but in return offers a wealth of details that reveal themselves over repeated listens.
Nu Breed is an album that does not take shortcuts. It requires time, openness, and attention, but delivers an intense experience shaped by tension, openness, and constant shifts in perspective.
It is the kind of work that does not reveal itself in a single listen, but continues to unfold gradually, leaving the impression of music that is alive and in constant transformation.
