I Degreed tornano con Curtain Calls, ottavo capitolo di una carriera costruita con una continuità quasi ostinata, come se ogni due anni la band si ritrovasse naturalmente a fare il punto senza mai perdere direzione. Pubblicato da Frontiers Music Srl, il disco prosegue un percorso iniziato nel 2011 che li ha portati a diventare una presenza stabile e riconoscibile della scena melodic hard rock svedese, con un’identità che non si limita a un solo registro ma si muove con disinvoltura tra apertura pop, impatto più heavy e sensibilità AOR, sempre senza forzature.
In questo nuovo lavoro la band guidata dai fratelli Eriksson continua a muoversi con naturalezza dentro un linguaggio ormai pienamente riconoscibile, dove tutto sembra incastrarsi con un equilibrio quasi istintivo. Le chitarre brillanti di Daniel Johansson danno spinta e definizione al suono, mentre le tastiere di Mikael Blanc riempiono gli spazi senza mai appesantire, creando quella trama melodica che è ormai parte del DNA del gruppo. Al basso e alla voce, Robin Eriksson tiene insieme tutto con una presenza costante e sicura, mentre la batteria di Mats Eriksson dà struttura e dinamica all’intero impianto. La produzione, ancora una volta nelle mani di Mats Eriksson, rafforza questa identità con un suono moderno, pulito ma non levigato fino all’anonimato, capace di lasciare respirare sia la potenza che la melodia.
L’apertura con One Helluva Ride chiarisce subito l’intenzione: energia da live, approccio diretto e un assolo di Daniel Johansson che si inserisce con naturalezza senza spezzare il ritmo del brano. Holding On To Yesterday punta invece su un ritornello che si apre subito e ti rimane in testa, diventando uno dei momenti più immediati del disco.
Con Believe affiora la componente più radiofonica della band, quella vena pop che i Degreed sanno gestire con equilibrio, costruendo melodie chiare e subito memorizzabili. È un brano che funziona anche come punto d’ingresso ideale nell’identità del disco.
The Rambler rappresenta una deviazione più intima e acustica, con sfumature folk e un’atmosfera dal respiro quasi irlandese che rallenta il passo e cambia completamente il colore dell’ascolto. Subito dopo Matter Of The Heart riporta tutto in territorio AOR, con una prova vocale di Robin Eriksson intensa e ben controllata, capace di muoversi tra potenza e sensibilità melodica senza forzature.
Guiding Light si muove su un equilibrio immediato tra spinta e
melodia, con un andamento solido e diretto.
My Blood alza il livello di tensione con un taglio più serrato e
incisivo.
La title track Curtain Calls si apre su una dimensione più ampia
e melodica, lasciando spazio alla voce e al respiro del brano.
Broken Dreams scende su toni più raccolti e riflessivi, con una
scrittura più emotiva.
Promise Me chiude con una linea morbida e cantabile, che riporta
in primo piano il lato più melodico della band.

Nel complesso, questi brani costruiscono un flusso coerente e ben bilanciato, dove ogni episodio aggiunge una sfumatura diversa senza mai spezzare l’identità del disco.
Robin Eriksson si conferma ancora una volta al centro dell’equilibrio sonoro: la sua voce domina con sicurezza, riuscendo a passare da toni più morbidi a soluzioni più spinte senza perdere naturalezza. È uno degli elementi che continuano a distinguere i Degreed nel panorama melodico europeo.
Curtain Calls conferma i Degreed come una band che conosce bene il proprio linguaggio e lo porta avanti senza inciampi, con una sicurezza che nasce più dall’esperienza che dalla ricerca di effetti. È un disco che non ha bisogno di grandi strappi per farsi notare: lavora di equilibrio, di melodia, di piccoli dettagli che alla fine fanno la differenza.
C’è una sensazione costante di controllo, ma anche di naturalezza, come se questi brani fossero stati scritti senza forzature, lasciando che fossero le melodie a guidare tutto il resto. Degreed return with Curtain Calls, the eighth chapter of a career built with an almost stubborn continuity, as if every two years the band naturally comes together to take stock without ever losing direction. Released via Frontiers Music Srl, the album continues a path that began in 2011, establishing them as a solid and recognisable presence in the Swedish melodic hard rock scene, with an identity that is never confined to a single register but moves effortlessly between pop openness, heavier impact and AOR sensibilities, always without forcing anything.
In this new work, the band led by the Eriksson brothers continues to operate within a fully defined musical language, where everything feels locked in with an almost instinctive balance. Daniel Johansson’s bright guitars add drive and definition, while Mikael Blanc’s keyboards fill the space without ever becoming heavy, shaping the melodic texture that has become part of the band’s DNA. On bass and vocals, Robin Eriksson holds everything together with a steady and confident presence, while Mats Eriksson’s drumming provides structure and dynamic support. Once again, Mats Eriksson’s production reinforces this identity with a modern, clean sound that never becomes sterile, allowing both power and melody to breathe naturally.
The opening track One Helluva Ride immediately sets the tone: live energy, a direct approach, and a guitar solo from Daniel Johansson that fits naturally without breaking the flow. Holding On To Yesterday instead focuses on a hook that opens up instantly and stays in your head, making it one of the most immediate highlights of the record.
With Believe, the more radio-friendly side of the band comes to the surface, a pop-leaning sensibility that Degreed handle with balance, crafting clean, instantly memorable melodies. It also works as a perfect entry point into the album’s identity.
The Rambler offers a more intimate acoustic deviation, with folk touches and an almost Irish atmosphere that slows things down and shifts the album’s colour entirely. Right after, Matter Of The Heart brings everything back into AOR territory, with Robin Eriksson delivering an intense yet controlled vocal performance, moving between power and melodic sensitivity without overstatement.
Guiding Light strikes a straightforward balance between drive and melody, with a solid and immediate flow. My Blood raises the tension with a tighter, more incisive edge. The title track Curtain Calls opens into a wider, more melodic space, giving room to voice and atmosphere. Broken Dreams leans into more reflective and restrained tones, with a more emotional writing style. Promise Me closes this stretch on a softer, more melodic line, bringing the band’s most singable side to the forefront. Together, these tracks create a coherent and well-balanced flow, where each piece adds a different shade without ever breaking the album’s identity.
Robin Eriksson once again stands at the centre of the band’s sound balance: his voice carries the album with confidence, shifting naturally between softer tones and more powerful passages without losing authenticity.
