Jordan Corda – Awakenings (A.MA Records, 2026)
Memoria, cambiamento e radici in musica
Dopo questa lunga apertura arriva It Will Forget Us, appena un minuto e ventotto secondi.

Jordan Corda – Awakenings (A.MA Records, 2026)
Memory, Change and Roots in Music
There are albums in which music also becomes a way of coming to terms with one’s own journey. Awakenings, the debut album as a leader by Sardinian vibraphonist and composer Jordan Corda, comes from this very need and tells a personal and geographical story: childhood in Sardinia, the move to mainland Italy, and the growing awareness of what is left behind and how much there is still to discover.
The project also deserves praise for A.MA Records and its founder Antonio Martino, for giving space to such a personal debut and for the care with which the label continues to support new voices in contemporary jazz.
Jordan Corda is a vibraphonist from Cagliari, born in 1994. His musical journey began with percussion and drums at the Cagliari Conservatory, before he focused on vibraphone and jazz. He continued his studies at the conservatories in Milan and Pescara and further developed his skills in the Netherlands. Over the years, he has performed with various musicians and taken part in festivals and events in Italy and abroad. In 2026, he made his debut as a leader with Awakenings, released by A.MA Records.
Corda built the album with Luca Mannutza on piano, Paolo Recchia on alto saxophone, Daniele Sorrentino on double bass and Sasha Mashin on drums, who also produced the album. The vibraphone remains at the centre of the project, but its sound is constantly in dialogue with piano, saxophone, double bass and drums, within a form of jazz that draws on modal, spiritual and contemporary approaches.
Recorded in Rome in October 2025, Awakenings consists of twelve tracks in which the musical dimension meets the autobiographical one. Environmental sounds also play an important role: the urban life of the present enters the album alongside Sardinian roots, culminating in the participation of the vocal group Canto a Tenore Santu Larettu di Silanus, whose voices are deeply connected to Corda’s homeland.
The twelve tracks follow a clear path, with the titles serving as points of reference along the way. You, Me And The Mirror opens the album with more than eight minutes of music and immediately introduces an introspective dimension, already suggested by the confrontation implied in the title. Corda’s vibraphone enters into dialogue with Recchia’s alto saxophone and Luca Mannutza’s piano, supported by Sorrentino’s double bass and Mashin’s drums. The piece develops gradually, allowing the interaction between the five musicians to emerge and establishing from the outset the personal journey that runs through Awakenings.
After this extended opening comes It Will Forget Us, lasting just one minute and twenty-eight seconds. The track stands out for the presence of Canto a Tenore Santu Larettu di Silanus, bringing one of the most distinctive expressions of Sardinian vocal tradition into the album. In a record built around Corda’s personal story and its relationship with Sardinia, memory and change, the Sardinian voices add an element deeply connected to his origins.
The Continent is the track in which Jordan Corda’s personal story emerges most directly. The title refers to his departure from Sardinia and his move to mainland Italy, marking an important transition in the journey told through Awakenings. The vibraphone leads the composition, while the music conveys above all a sense of change, of a new phase of life beginning while leaving childhood behind without erasing its roots.
Lunar Connections broadens the perspective, already suggested by the title and its reference to a connection that extends beyond the personal dimension. The track develops this idea through a suspended and contemplative atmosphere, allowing the music to move freely. It is one of the moments in which the album widens its perspective, moving from an individual story towards a more universal perception of relationships and change.
With We comes a more intimate moment, performed by Sorrentino on solo double bass. Within the themes of memory, identity and change, this brief composition leaves room for resonance and silence, with a sound that is simple and direct.
The Old Story brings the narrative towards the themes of the past and memory. Over seven minutes, the music develops through an extended and varied journey, in which the title seems to evoke something belonging to an earlier time that continues to leave traces in the present. It is a piece in which Corda’s contemporary writing engages with this idea without turning it into nostalgia, keeping the dialogue between composition and improvisation open.
Forget brings the theme of memory and oblivion to the foreground. The solo piano creates an intimate and measured moment, leaving space for pauses and resonance. A brief interlude that fits naturally into the album’s journey, where memory, the past and change repeatedly meet.
With All Began With A Rope, the pace slows down and the music becomes more intimate. The band moves at a measured pace, leaving room for pauses and resonance. The track brings the theme of change onto a more personal level, in keeping with the journey Corda explores throughout the album.
Allumiere 38 is one of the album’s more developed pieces. The quintet starts from a clearly defined theme and develops it while leaving room for improvisation. Vibraphone, piano and saxophone alternate, while double bass and drums support the rhythm. The music gradually builds, reaches greater intensity in the middle section and then returns to a more relaxed flow.
Re-Fall gives the quintet all the space it needs to develop the composition. Vibraphone, piano and saxophone alternate and meet over the support of double bass and drums, moving from more relaxed passages to moments of greater intensity. In listening to it, the dialogue between the five musicians and the movement of the rhythm section bring to mind a kind of jazz fusion that recalls the energy and freedom of the 1970s.
Ourselves, just over two minutes long, is a brief passage performed by solo saxophone. The sound remains simple and intimate, with a calm flow that leads the album towards its conclusion. A straightforward moment that naturally prepares the arrival of the title track.
Awakenings, the album’s title track, closes the record with a hypnotic, progressive coda that slowly fades away, revealing the sound of footsteps in the Sardinian countryside. After the journey from childhood on the island to life on the mainland, Sardinia once again becomes a tangible presence, made up of real and familiar sounds. The ending brings the music back to Corda’s roots while leaving the journey open to the possibility of a new beginning. It is this return that gives the album its circular shape. Coming home does not mean erasing the departure or simply rediscovering what was left behind. The experience of the journey remains and changes the way one looks at one’s origins. The Sardinia we hear at the end is therefore not only the place where everything began, but a place that can be experienced again with a different awareness.
Awakenings therefore comes to an end without offering definitive answers. The awakening suggested by the title is not a destination, but a willingness to continue observing, remembering, forgetting and changing. Jordan Corda transforms his personal journey into an album in which jazz becomes above all a space for listening: to other musicians, to places and, before anything else, to oneself.
I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys contemporary jazz, improvisation and musical cross-pollination, and appreciates music that brings composition and freedom of expression together.
