Vade Aratro – I Racconti Del Macero

Vade Aratro – I Racconti Del Macero (Andromeda Relix / Lizard Records / Ma.Ra.Cash Records, 2026)

Suoni agresti, riff potenti e memoria in movimento

Vade Aratro – I Racconti Del Macero (Andromeda Relix / Lizard Records / Ma.Ra.Cash Records, 2026)

Rustic sounds, powerful riffs and memory in motion

There are albums that seem to come from far away, and others that carry with them the unmistakable scent of a particular place. I Racconti del Macero, the fourth album by Vade Aratro (Andromeda Relix / Lizard Records), clearly belongs to the latter category. It is an album born from the land, from memory, and from those provincial summers that, when looked back on years later, take on almost the substance of myth. Above all, though, it is an album that turns all of this into music, through powerful riffs, raw rhythms and atmospheres capable of bringing back images that seemed to have been lost.

Giving voice to this journey is the trio of Riccardo Balboni on drums and vocals, Federico Negrini on bass and vocals, and Marcello Magoni on vocals, guitars, piano and accordion. An essential line-up, but by no means lacking in colour: the weight of the rhythm section, guitars, piano and accordion come together to create the raw, deeply earthy sound that runs throughout the album.

The story begins on the evening of August 10, 1996, around an imaginary macero in the countryside near Bologna. A precise date, almost like a photograph preserved in memory. It is also the summer of being seventeen, an age when everything still seems possible and a night spent with friends can, many years later, become something much greater.

The macero is not simply a pond. It is part of the landscape of the Emilian countryside, historically connected to hemp processing and to a rural world that today risks becoming little more than a memory. It is around this place that Vade Aratro build a small narrative universe populated by teenagers, encounters, strange characters, symbols and apparently surreal situations.

But behind this seemingly simple and playful story lies something far more layered. The band describes it as an alchemical-metallurgical initiation tale, deliberately leaving listeners free to follow the meanings and connections between one song and another. Perhaps this is one of the album's most fascinating qualities: not everything needs to be explained. Some things are better left to intuition.

There is something that stands out when an album like this arrives in the mail: the feeling that someone has genuinely thought about the person who would receive it. In these four years of running the blog, after so many albums listened to and written about, it is not often that such care is encountered.

With Vade Aratro, even everything surrounding the music has something to say. The hand-drawn envelope, the fanzine, the handwritten material and that little rural touch accompanying the album immediately convey their identity. These are not simply extras added to the record, but part of the experience, showing just how much care has gone into every detail.

At a time when music increasingly reaches us through a screen, this kind of attention creates a more direct and genuine connection with the listener. The same passion that can be heard in the songs is also there, in the hands of those who made this album.

Musically, I Racconti del Macero is rooted in Heavy Metal Agreste, the highly personal formula created by Vade Aratro, blending folk metal, heavy metal with progressive elements, Emilian folklore and a sensibility close to Italian singer-songwriter traditions. The sound is raw and earthy, yet never predictable, moving between heavy riffs, melodic passages, more narrative moments and distinctive rhythmic ideas.

Vade Aratro chose to record the album live in the studio, all together, embracing a way of working that belongs to another era. The result gives the songs a strong sense of immediacy, allowing the interaction between the musicians to breathe and, above all, creating the feeling of actually being in the room while the music takes shape. And the fire, as the musicians themselves describe it, can be heard.

With Warlord, the album gets underway without much preamble, immediately setting the story in motion. There is an uneasy summer energy here, along with that adolescent urge to get away from home and head somewhere that seems to make anything possible. The guitars give the track a solemn, almost imposing character, while bass and drums drive it through shifting rhythms and sudden bursts of speed. Marcello Magoni’s voice adds grit and personality, keeping the storytelling element firmly at the heart of the song. A direct opening, but one that already reveals how naturally Vade Aratro’s sound moves between sheer power and musical exploration.

The second episode maintains the tension but makes it even more physical. Uova di pietra relies heavily on the impact of the guitars and a rhythm section that leaves little room for breathing space. The song seems to unfold through a series of images, moving between earth, water and the rural landscape that forms the album’s natural setting. There is something primal in the way it develops, an instinctive force that makes the track particularly immediate and visceral.

With Nel tempo della canapa, the past takes center stage. Running for more than six minutes, the track moves through rhythmic changes and Folk Metal atmospheres, anchored by a vocal motif that is difficult to shake from the mind. Memories of the countryside emerge through simple images connected to work and to the generations who inhabited these places long before they became little more than memories. It is one of the moments when the relationship between landscape and memory becomes especially powerful.

The title itself introduces a lighter, almost playful dimension, yet the music retains the rough-edged character that runs throughout the album. Che il bagno migliore si fa nello stagno immediately evokes hot summer days, water as an escape from the heat, and evenings spent outdoors. The trio plays with remarkable cohesion, giving the track a lively momentum while also bringing out the earthy sense of humor that is such an integral part of Vade Aratro’s world.

Fifty changes direction, opening up a more intimate passage. The piano gradually introduces a ballad that grows naturally, without ever forcing the emotion, creating a suspended and reflective atmosphere. The sound becomes more delicate here, leaving room for feelings and for a sense of contemplation about time and whatever may still lie ahead. It is a necessary pause in the journey, allowing the album to reveal a gentler side beneath its more aggressive exterior.

With Arare il mare, the rhythmic drive returns. The guitar takes center stage, riding over a syncopated groove that creates a constant sense of movement. The title itself suggests an apparently absurd challenge: attempting something that seems impossible, precisely because the act of pursuing it gives it meaning. The music follows the same idea, balancing a down-to-earth quality with a touch of creative madness.

Il ragazzo con la giacca rossa is one of the album’s most painful moments. The song introduces a memory marked by loss, inevitably shifting the emotional tone of the story. Behind the figure of the boy lies the image of a life cut short, transformed through music into a presence that continues to return. There is no need to exaggerate the sadness; the restraint of the storytelling is exactly what makes the song feel so deeply human.

Night takes over with Il recinto dei morti. The landscape becomes darker and more unsettling, while the reference to an old cemetery creates an atmosphere suspended somewhere between reality and imagination. The music follows that mood, moving from more restrained passages into increasingly aggressive sections. The result is one of the album’s most narrative-driven tracks, built around a sense of mystery that deliberately remains unresolved.

Panzer brings another sudden acceleration. In just a few minutes, the song turns an image so surreal that it could have come straight from a film: a German tank buried in the mud of a macero. The music embraces that bizarre vision with heavy riffs, a relentless rhythm and an almost cinematic approach. It is one of the album’s most immediate moments, combining a taste for the absurd with the sheer physical force of the sound.

The closing track, Le rane di San Lorenzo, is perhaps where all the different sides of the album finally converge. At almost seven minutes, it has enough room to shift perspectives several times, moving between energetic passages, suspended moments and more evocative atmospheres. In the background remains that August night: darkness, still water and the sound of frogs beneath the San Lorenzo sky.

It is in this closing passage that the album reveals its most authentic strength: not simply in bringing the past back to life, but in its ability to transform places, people and memories into a story that continues to live through music.

In the end, I Racconti del Macero leaves the feeling of having experienced something that goes far beyond a simple album. Within these ten songs, the Bolognese countryside, adolescence, the work of past generations, friendships, losses and those seemingly small stories that, over the years, become part of a collective memory all exist side by side.

The macero thus becomes much more than a place. It is a space suspended between past and present, where the two continue to meet, where everyday reality can turn into legend and every detail may conceal a deeper meaning. Vade Aratro manage to tell this story without taking away the rough, ironic and instinctive character of their music, allowing the songs themselves to gradually build this world.

And when the final notes of Le rane di San Lorenzo arrive, what remains is almost the image of a summer night: the darkness, the still water, the sound of frogs and eyes turned towards a sky filled with stars. It is an ending that does not truly close the story, but leaves it open, much like the memories that matter most.

Because some places disappear, some people leave us, and some moments never return. But as long as someone finds a way to tell their stories through a song, a tale or simply a memory, they continue to exist. I Racconti del Macero is born from precisely this need: to take something that belongs to the past and give it a voice again, carrying it forward to anyone who listens and cannot help but stop for a moment and look up at those stars.
