Compassionizer – The Faithful of the Land

Compassionizer – The Faithful of the Land (ArtBeat Music, 2026)

Leonid Perevalov suona clarinetti bassi, piccolo clarinetto e flauto dolce, mentre AndRey Stefinoff aggiunge altri clarinetti.

In Exchange for His Soul (Part 1) amplia ulteriormente questo approccio.

Con My Joy and Crown arrivano invece dimensioni più contenute.

Some That Trouble You torna a sviluppare un percorso più ampio.

In Deep Calleth unto Deep at the Noise of Thy Waterspouts l'attenzione si sposta nuovamente verso una costruzione più dilatata.

Compassionizer – The Faithful of the Land (ArtBeat Music, 2026)

Free music that turns exploration into emotion

Some albums demand careful listening because they do not follow easily predictable paths. The Faithful of the Land, the fifth album by Compassionizer, belongs to this category: a work in which Ivan Rozmainsky and the musicians involved combine composition, experimentation and a meditative dimension, without giving up complex structures and constant changes of direction.

The lineup is led by Serghei Liubcenco, who plays electric and acoustic guitars, bass, rubab, drums and a variety of percussion instruments, including doira and dholak. Leonid Perevalov plays bass clarinets, piccolo clarinet and recorder, while AndRey Stefinoff adds further clarinets. Ivan Rozmainsky, the project's creator and composer, handles synths and samples. Sabina Vostner is the main vocal presence throughout most of the album, and also plays ukulele.

Several guest musicians complete the lineup: Dmitry Chichagov on balalaika, Kota Davudova on vocals, Alexey Evlanov on acoustic guitars and balalaika, Alexey Krupa on theremin, Konstantin Mochalov on electric guitar, Anna Nitsman on Herberts Kolbe pipe organ, and Oleg Prilutsky on trumpet. It is a particularly rich ensemble, bringing together traditional instruments, electronics, rock and chamber music within Rozmainsky's compositions.

The project grew out of the experience of Ivan Rozmainsky, founder of Roz Vitalis (here is my review of their latest work), but over time Compassionizer have developed an identity of their own. Here, the music moves between avant-prog, chamber rock, ambient and experimentation, with a strong focus on melody.

An important presence is Slovenian singer Sabina Vostner, whose voice appears on most of the tracks. Her voice is not used simply as a melodic element, but becomes an integral part of the musical architecture, creating contrasts with the instrumental sections.

The album opens with Blessed is He That Considereth the Poor, a piece lasting more than ten minutes in which Vostner's voice gradually becomes part of a richly changing musical structure. Guitars, clarinets, percussion and keyboards alternate without following a conventional formula, while the composition maintains a strong focus on melody.

In Exchange for His Soul (Part 1) develops this approach further. It is an intricate piece in which the different instrumental elements are brought together with considerable freedom. The presence of clarinets and guitars creates continuous shifts between more restrained passages and more dynamic sections.

With My Joy and Crown, the dimensions become more compact. The track lasts just under four minutes and also introduces the theremin, played by Alexey Krupa. It is one of the moments where the Compassionizer's ability to incorporate unusual instruments into a highly personal form of composition becomes particularly evident.

Some That Trouble You returns to a more extended development. Sabina Vostner's voice interacts with a particularly varied instrumental ensemble, while the different sections follow one another through changes of rhythm and unexpected turns that keep the listening experience engaging.

In Exchange for His Soul (Part 2) takes up material from the second track in a much shorter form. It is not simply a repetition, but another piece of the album's conceptual journey.

In Deep Calleth unto Deep at the Noise of Thy Waterspouts, the music once again moves towards a more expansive structure. Anna Nitsman's pipe organ takes on a distinctive role, becoming part of an arrangement in which the different sounds are brought together with considerable freedom.

The album closes with the title track, The Faithful of the Land, its longest piece at more than eleven minutes. Here we find many of the elements that have accompanied the album throughout: vocals, guitars, clarinets, percussion, keyboards and contributions from guest musicians combine in a composition that develops through successive transformations rather than seeking an immediate resolution.

The Faithful of the Land is therefore an album that is not easily confined to a single definition. Compassionizer describe their music as “melodic meditative avant-garde” and “ambient rock in opposition”, but perhaps it is precisely the freedom with which these elements are combined that best represents the album. The complexity of the compositions never overshadows the search for melody, while the wide range of instruments never turns the album into a mere exercise in experimentation.

It is a record that requires time and attention, but that is precisely what allows different details to emerge with each listen. At a time when much music seems to seek an immediately recognizable direction, The Faithful of the Land chooses a decidedly more personal path.
