Ci sono album che scelgono di raccontare storie fantastiche e altri che preferiscono osservare il mondo in cui viviamo. Elements Of Hope, pubblicato dalla OOB Records, appartiene decisamente alla seconda categoria. È il terzo album in studio di Glorious Wolf, il progetto del chitarrista, compositore e polistrumentista olandese Ruud Dielen, musicista che ha costruito negli anni un percorso personale all'interno del mondo progressive, unendo la forza della chitarra, atmosfere dilatate vicine al mondo dei Pink Floyd, elementi fusion e arrangiamenti dal respiro sinfonico.
La storia musicale di Ruud Dielen nasce però da lontano. Dopo le esperienze con alcune cover band come Blow Out e successivamente Dicke Betsey, nelle quali reinterpretava brani di artisti come Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Toto e Genesis, il chitarrista olandese ha iniziato a sviluppare un proprio linguaggio compositivo. Nel corso degli anni la sua musica si è evoluta passando da atmosfere più ambientali e sognanti a territori più sperimentali, attraversati da influenze progressive, fusion, jazz rock ed elementi più eclettici, senza mai perdere quella componente blues che caratterizza il suo modo di suonare.
Le sue composizioni nascono spesso da suggestioni legate all'astrologia e allo sciamanesimo, trasformate in veri e propri paesaggi sonori nei quali convivono chitarre acustiche ed elettriche, saz, sintetizzatori per chitarra, basso e percussioni. Prima di dedicarsi completamente al progetto Glorious Wolf, Dielen ha fatto parte del trio sperimentale Perpetual Béta, un progetto basato sull'improvvisazione e influenzato da realtà come Weather Report e Frank Zappa, esperienza che ha contribuito ad ampliare ulteriormente la sua ricerca musicale. Dopo otto anni il gruppo si è sciolto a causa delle diverse direzioni artistiche intraprese dai componenti, permettendo a Dielen di concentrarsi sulle proprie composizioni fino alla pubblicazione di Aquarius nel 2017.
La sigla Glorious Wolf prende forma nel 2017 con Aquarius, un album prevalentemente strumentale nel quale Ruud Dielen presenta per la prima volta il suo universo sonoro fatto di atmosfere sospese, chitarre evocative e suggestioni progressive. Nel 2019 arriva Zodiac, un lavoro che amplia la dimensione compositiva del progetto introducendo anche elementi vocali e una maggiore attenzione alla narrazione. Nel 2023 è la volta di Mysterious Traveler, un album che prosegue la ricerca tra rock progressivo, ambientazioni più sperimentali e paesaggi sonori ricchi di sfumature, confermando la capacità di Dielen di unire melodia, improvvisazione e ricerca.
Con Elements Of Hope, pubblicato in questo 2026, Glorious Wolf apre un nuovo capitolo della propria storia, trovando un equilibrio ancora più maturo tra la componente strumentale delle origini e una dimensione narrativa più intensa. L'obiettivo di Ruud Dielen rimane quello di portare questa musica anche sul palco, trasformando le atmosfere costruite in studio in un'esperienza condivisa con il pubblico.
Composto e arrangiato dallo stesso Dielen, Elements Of Hope vede la partecipazione di una formazione ricca di sfumature: le voci di Frank van der Borg e Jyoti Verhoeff, autori anche dei testi, accompagnano il racconto sostenute dalle armonie di Ties van Diesen; completano la formazione Kike Paglia alla batteria, Tim Ros al basso, Harrie Knapen all'Hammond e al pianoforte Yamaha CP70, Reg Parham al sassofono e il compianto Thomas Zunk al theremin e Mellotron. Lo stesso Ruud Dielen firma chitarre acustiche ed elettriche, basso fretless, sintetizzatori, Mellotron ed effetti sonori, confermandosi il cuore creativo dell'intero progetto.
Nel cuore di Elements Of Hope c'è un concept che parla del nostro tempo senza trasformarsi in un manifesto. Attraverso il linguaggio del rock progressivo, Ruud Dielen racconta il cammino di un bambino verso l'età adulta, un percorso segnato dalle inquietudini del presente – dall'intelligenza artificiale ai cambiamenti climatici, dalle guerre alla crescente complessità della società moderna – ma attraversato da una convinzione che non viene mai meno: la speranza resta l'elemento capace di guidare il futuro.
La suite che apre il disco Elements Of Hope, divisa in cinque capitoli, rappresenta il cuore narrativo dell'album e racconta il percorso di crescita del protagonista, dall'infanzia verso una maggiore consapevolezza del mondo che lo circonda.
Elements Of Hope Pt.1 – Instrumental apre il racconto con atmosfere sospese e cinematografiche, dove le chitarre e le tastiere di Ruud Dielen costruiscono il paesaggio sonoro nel quale prende forma la storia. Con Elements Of Hope Pt.2 – Carrying This Yoke entrano le voci di Frank van der Borg e Jyoti Verhoeff, dando voce al peso delle responsabilità e alle difficoltà del percorso umano, mentre gli arrangiamenti alternano momenti introspettivi e aperture progressive.
Elements Of Hope Pt.3 – Into The Clouds porta il disco verso una dimensione più luminosa e sognante, con melodie ampie e atmosfere evocative. Il breve intermezzo Elements Of Hope Pt.4 – Instrumental accompagna il passaggio verso il capitolo conclusivo, Elements Of Hope Pt.5 – Life's Chaotic Spell, dove le tensioni e le contraddizioni del mondo contemporaneo emergono attraverso una scrittura più intensa e articolata, senza mai perdere quel filo di speranza che attraversa l'intero lavoro.
L’album prosegue con If You Please, un brano strumentale nel quale emerge il lato più melodico e raffinato del progetto. La chitarra di Ruud Dielen dialoga con le tastiere e con una sezione ritmica ricca di sfumature, creando un equilibrio tra eleganza, ricerca sonora e atmosfere progressive. Un momento nel quale Glorious Wolf dimostra come sia possibile raccontare emozioni anche senza l'utilizzo della voce, lasciando che siano gli strumenti a costruire il proprio linguaggio.
In If I Only emerge una dimensione più introspettiva. Le dinamiche crescono lentamente, lasciando che siano soprattutto le emozioni a guidare il racconto. La voce trasmette vulnerabilità, mentre gli interventi della chitarra sembrano rispondere ai pensieri del protagonista.
Con Whirlwinds & Maelstroms torna il volto più movimentato della band. Il titolo anticipa perfettamente il contenuto: una composizione ricca di cambi di tempo, sezioni strumentali elaborate e una costante sensazione di movimento. Il sax di Reg Parham aggiunge colore e imprevedibilità, mentre il theremin di Thomas Zunk regala sfumature quasi psichedeliche che ampliano ulteriormente il panorama sonoro.
La conclusione è affidata a Everything Must Break To Grow, che riprende alcuni temi della suite iniziale trasformandoli in un finale ricco di significato. Più che una semplice reprise, il brano rappresenta la sintesi dell'intero percorso: per crescere bisogna attraversare crisi, cambiamenti e inevitabili fratture. Il messaggio conclusivo non è pessimista, ma profondamente umano, perché ricorda che anche nei momenti più difficili può nascere qualcosa di nuovo.

Con Elements Of Hope, Ruud Dielen ed i suoi Glorious Wolf realizzano un album che guarda alla grande tradizione del progressive rock senza rimanerne prigioniero. Le influenze dei maestri degli anni Settanta sono presenti come riferimento, ma vengono rielaborate attraverso una sensibilità personale e un sound attuale, caratterizzato da una produzione moderna, atmosfere dilatate, ricerca timbrica e una scrittura capace di unire melodia, sperimentazione ed emozione. Il passato diventa così una fonte d'ispirazione, non un limite, permettendo alla band di costruire un linguaggio proprio e contemporaneo.
Ciò che rende speciale questo lavoro è il suo equilibrio tra racconto e musica. La storia di crescita, le paure del presente e le domande sul futuro non vengono mai affrontate con toni semplicistici, ma trasformate in immagini sonore ricche di sfumature. Ogni strumento contribuisce a creare un ambiente emotivo nel quale chitarre, tastiere, voci e arrangiamenti dialogano tra loro dando vita a un percorso coerente e profondamente umano.
Elements Of Hope è un album che parla delle difficoltà del nostro tempo, ma sceglie di non fermarsi alla parte più oscura della realtà. Il messaggio finale è racchiuso proprio nel titolo: anche quando tutto sembra fragile e incerto, esiste ancora la possibilità di ricostruire, crescere e immaginare qualcosa di migliore.

Progressive emotions between dreams and reality
There are albums that choose to tell imaginary stories, while others prefer to observe the world we live in. Elements Of Hope, released by OOB Records, definitely belongs to the second category. It is the third studio album by Glorious Wolf, the project of Dutch guitarist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Ruud Dielen, a musician who has built his own personal path within the progressive music world, combining the power of the guitar, spacious atmospheres reminiscent of Pink Floyd, fusion elements and symphonic arrangements.
However, Ruud Dielen’s musical story began much earlier. After experiences with cover bands such as Blow Out and later Dicke Betsey, where he performed songs by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Toto and Genesis, the Dutch guitarist began developing his own compositional language. Over the years, his music evolved from more ambient and dreamlike atmospheres towards increasingly experimental territories, influenced by progressive rock, fusion, jazz rock and more eclectic elements, while always maintaining that blues component that characterizes his playing style.
His compositions often originate from inspirations connected to astrology and shamanism, transformed into real sonic landscapes where acoustic and electric guitars, saz, guitar synthesizers, bass and percussion coexist. Before dedicating himself completely to the Glorious Wolf project, Dielen was part of the experimental trio Perpetual Béta, a project based on improvisation and influenced by artists such as Weather Report and Frank Zappa. This experience further expanded his musical research. After eight years, the band dissolved due to the different artistic directions pursued by its members, allowing Dielen to focus entirely on his own compositions, leading to the release of Aquarius in 2017.
The Glorious Wolf name took shape in 2017 with Aquarius, a mainly instrumental album in which Ruud Dielen introduced his sonic universe, built on suspended atmospheres, evocative guitars and progressive influences. In 2019 came Zodiac, a work that expanded the project’s compositional dimension by introducing vocal elements and a stronger focus on storytelling. In 2023, Mysterious Traveler continued this exploration between progressive rock, more experimental atmospheres and richly detailed soundscapes, confirming Dielen’s ability to combine melody, improvisation and sonic research.
With Elements Of Hope, released in 2026, Glorious Wolf opens a new chapter in its history, finding an even more mature balance between the instrumental roots of the project and a deeper narrative dimension. Ruud Dielen’s goal remains to bring this music to the stage as well, transforming the atmospheres created in the studio into a shared experience with the audience.
Composed and arranged by Dielen himself, Elements Of Hope features a richly nuanced lineup: the voices of Frank van der Borg and Jyoti Verhoeff, who also wrote the lyrics, accompany the story, supported by the harmonies of Ties van Diesen. Completing the lineup are Kike Paglia on drums, Tim Ros on bass, Harrie Knapen on Hammond organ and Yamaha CP70 piano, Reg Parham on saxophone and the late Thomas Zunk on theremin and Mellotron. Ruud Dielen himself handles acoustic and electric guitars, fretless bass, synthesizers, Mellotron and sound effects, confirming his role as the creative heart of the entire project.
At the heart of Elements Of Hope lies a concept that reflects on our time without turning into a manifesto. Through the language of progressive rock, Ruud Dielen tells the story of a child growing into adulthood, a journey marked by the concerns of the present – from artificial intelligence to climate change, from wars to the increasing complexity of modern society – yet guided by a belief that never fades: hope remains the element capable of leading us towards the future.
The opening suite, “Elements Of Hope”, divided into five chapters, represents the narrative heart of the album and follows the protagonist’s path of growth, from childhood towards a deeper awareness of the world around him.
“Elements Of Hope Pt.1 – Instrumental” opens the story with suspended and cinematic atmospheres, where Ruud Dielen’s guitars and keyboards create the sonic landscape in which the story begins to unfold. With “Elements Of Hope Pt.2 – Carrying This Yoke”, the voices of Frank van der Borg and Jyoti Verhoeff enter the scene, giving expression to the weight of responsibilities and the difficulties of the human journey, while the arrangements alternate between introspective moments and progressive openings.
“Elements Of Hope Pt.3 – Into The Clouds” takes the album towards a brighter and more dreamlike dimension, with wide melodies and evocative atmospheres. The short interlude “Elements Of Hope Pt.4 – Instrumental” accompanies the transition towards the final chapter, “Elements Of Hope Pt.5 – Life’s Chaotic Spell”, where the tensions and contradictions of the contemporary world emerge through a more intense and complex composition, without ever losing that thread of hope running throughout the entire work.
The album continues with “If You Please”, an instrumental piece that highlights the more melodic and refined side of the project. Ruud Dielen’s guitar interacts with the keyboards and a rhythm section full of subtle nuances, creating a balance between elegance, sonic exploration and progressive atmospheres. It is a moment in which Glorious Wolf demonstrates how emotions can also be expressed without vocals, allowing the instruments themselves to create their own language.
In “If I Only”, a more introspective dimension emerges. The dynamics slowly develop, allowing emotions to guide the narrative. The voice conveys vulnerability, while the guitar passages seem to respond to the thoughts and reflections of the protagonist.
With “Whirlwinds & Maelstroms”, the more dynamic side of the band returns. The title perfectly anticipates the character of the track: a composition filled with rhythmic changes, intricate instrumental sections and a constant sense of movement. Reg Parham’s saxophone adds colour and unpredictability, while Thomas Zunk’s theremin introduces almost psychedelic shades, further expanding the sonic landscape.
The album closes with “Everything Must Break To Grow”, which brings back some of the themes from the opening suite and transforms them into a meaningful finale. More than a simple reprise, the song represents the conclusion of the entire journey: in order to grow, we must go through crises, changes and inevitable moments of breaking apart. The final message is not pessimistic, but deeply human, reminding us that even in the most difficult moments, something new can emerge.
With Elements Of Hope, Ruud Dielen and his Glorious Wolf create an album that looks towards the great tradition of progressive rock without becoming trapped by it. The influences of the masters of the Seventies are present as a reference point, but they are reshaped through a personal sensitivity and a contemporary sound, characterised by modern production, spacious atmospheres, detailed sonic research and songwriting capable of combining melody, experimentation and emotion. The past becomes a source of inspiration rather than a limitation, allowing the band to build its own distinctive and contemporary language.
What makes this work special is the balance between storytelling and music. The story of growth, the fears of the present and the questions surrounding the future are never approached in a simplistic way, but are transformed into rich sonic images filled with emotion and depth. Every instrument contributes to creating an emotional environment in which guitars, keyboards, vocals and arrangements interact naturally, giving life to a coherent and deeply human musical experience.
Elements Of Hope is an album that speaks about the difficulties of our time, but chooses not to remain focused on the darkest aspects of reality. The final message is already contained in the title itself: even when everything seems fragile and uncertain, there is still the possibility of rebuilding, growing and imagining something better.
With this album, Ruud Dielen confirms his artistic identity and shows that progressive rock can still be a language capable of describing the present, touching emotions and leaving space for hope. Elements Of Hope is a sincere and passionate work, where tradition and modernity meet, creating a sound that looks forward while keeping alive the spirit of exploration that has always defined progressive music.
