Ci sono incontri musicali che nascono dalla programmazione, dalle prove, dalla ricerca di una perfetta sintonia. E poi ci sono incontri che sembrano nascere quasi per istinto, affidandosi a qualcosa di più profondo: la capacità di ascoltare.
Pubblicato da Greydisc Records, Interchange One di Kevin Kastning e Paul Wertico racconta un incontro musicale fuori dagli schemi. Un album nato a distanza, tra il Maine e Chicago, ma capace di annullare ogni confine geografico attraverso l'ascolto e la sensibilità di due artisti. Nessuna strada già tracciata, nessuna formula da seguire: soltanto il desiderio di lasciarsi guidare dal momento, dall'improvvisazione e dalla fiducia reciproca.
La storia dietro questo lavoro è forse parte integrante della musica stessa. Un messaggio, una telefonata e poi il primo esperimento: Kastning invia a Wertico una propria improvvisazione. Il batterista ascolta soltanto pochi secondi prima di iniziare a registrare, senza sapere dove quella musica sarebbe andata a finire. Nessuna preparazione, nessuno spartito, nessun incontro in studio. Solo una risposta immediata a ciò che arrivava dall'altra parte.
Ed è proprio questa assenza di controllo a rendere il disco così particolare. Ogni brano nasce da una prima esecuzione completa, senza tagli o correzioni. La musica non viene costruita a tavolino, ma prende forma attraverso un dialogo invisibile, dove ogni nota diventa una conseguenza dell'ascolto dell'altro.
I sette movimenti di Adjacent Flowing Streams rappresentano perfettamente questa idea. Due correnti sonore che scorrono vicine, talvolta si sfiorano, talvolta sembrano prendere direzioni diverse, ma rimangono sempre unite da una misteriosa connessione. È una musica che non cerca di impressionare con la tecnica, anche se la tecnica dei protagonisti è straordinaria, ma invita soprattutto a entrare nel suo spazio, ad ascoltare ogni dettaglio.

Kevin Kastning porta nel progetto il suo universo unico, costruito attraverso strumenti da lui stesso sviluppati come la 36-string Double Contraguitar, la 30-string Contra-Baritone Guitar e le diverse chitarre a corde estese. Il suo modo di suonare crea profondità, risonanze e paesaggi sonori che sembrano provenire da luoghi lontani, dove la chitarra perde i confini abituali e diventa una vera orchestra.
Paul Wertico
Dall'altra parte Paul Wertico non accompagna semplicemente queste visioni, ma dialoga con esse. Il suo approccio alla batteria è fatto di colori, silenzi, piccoli dettagli e improvvise aperture. Dopo la straordinaria esperienza con il Pat Metheny Group, i sette Grammy Awards e una carriera ricca di collaborazioni, qui emerge soprattutto il musicista curioso, capace ancora oggi di mettersi completamente in gioco.
Ascoltando Interchange One si ha la sensazione di entrare in uno spazio sospeso, dove il tempo sembra seguire un respiro diverso e ogni suono nasce dall'incontro tra intuizione e ascolto. Kevin Kastning e Paul Wertico hanno trasformato una registrazione a distanza in un vero dialogo musicale, dimostrando che la distanza fisica può scomparire quando esiste una profonda sintonia artistica.
Questo album non racconta soltanto l'incontro tra una chitarra dalle possibilità infinite e una batteria capace di creare paesaggi sonori, ma soprattutto il valore della fiducia tra due musicisti che hanno scelto di affidarsi completamente all'istante. La collaborazione tra Kevin Kastning e Paul Wertico continuerà con Interchange Two, previsto per il 4 agosto 2026 sempre per Greydisc Records, confermando un incontro artistico nato quasi casualmente ma capace di generare nuove prospettive sonore.
Rimane la sensazione di aver ascoltato qualcosa di autentico e irripetibile: una conversazione senza parole, costruita attraverso vibrazioni, silenzi e intuizioni. There are musical encounters that are born from planning, rehearsals, and the search for perfect harmony. And then there are encounters that seem to emerge almost instinctively, relying on something deeper: the ability to truly listen.
Released by Greydisc Records, Interchange One by Kevin Kastning and Paul Wertico tells the story of a musical encounter beyond conventional boundaries. An album created across distance, between Maine and Chicago, yet able to erase every geographical barrier through the sensitivity and awareness of two artists. No predetermined path, no fixed formula to follow: only the desire to be guided by the moment, improvisation, and mutual trust.
The story behind this work is perhaps an essential part of the music itself. A message, a phone call, and then the first experiment: Kastning sends Wertico one of his improvisations. The drummer listens to only a few seconds before beginning to record, without knowing where that music would eventually lead. No preparation, no score, no meeting in the same studio. Just an immediate response to what was arriving from the other side.
And it is precisely this absence of control that makes the album so unique. Each piece is born from a complete first take, without edits or corrections. The music is not constructed in advance, but takes shape through an invisible conversation, where every note becomes a consequence of listening to the other musician.
The seven movements of Adjacent Flowing Streams perfectly represent this idea. Two sonic currents flowing close together, sometimes touching, sometimes seeming to move in different directions, yet always connected by a mysterious bond. This is music that does not seek to impress through technique, even though the technical abilities of both musicians are extraordinary, but instead invites the listener to enter its world and discover every detail.
Kevin Kastning brings his unique universe to the project, built around instruments he personally developed, including the 36-string Double Contraguitar, the 30-string Contra-Baritone Guitar, and other extended-range guitars. His playing creates depth, resonance, and soundscapes that seem to come from distant places, where the guitar transcends its traditional boundaries and becomes a complete orchestra.
On the other side, Paul Wertico does not simply accompany these visions, but enters into a true dialogue with them. His approach to drums is made of colours, silences, subtle details, and sudden openings. After his extraordinary experience with the Pat Metheny Group, seven Grammy Awards, and a career filled with collaborations, here we discover above all a curious musician, still willing to completely challenge himself.
Listening to Interchange One, one has the feeling of entering a suspended space, where time follows a different breath and every sound is born from the meeting of intuition and awareness. Kevin Kastning and Paul Wertico have transformed a remote recording process into a genuine musical conversation, proving that physical distance can disappear when a profound artistic connection exists.
