La ricerca del suono miracoloso
Con Fractal Guitar 4, pubblicato da MoonJune Records, Stephan Thelen prosegue un percorso iniziato nel 2015 che, attraverso i precedenti Fractal Guitar (2018), Fractal Guitar 2 (2021) e Fractal Guitar 3 (2023), ha trasformato la chitarra elettrica in un autentico laboratorio di ricerca sonora. Se il suo lavoro con i Sonar lo ha reso uno dei protagonisti più originali del minimalismo contemporaneo, questa serie parallela gli permette di spingersi ancora oltre, esplorando il rapporto tra poliritmie, effetti digitali e improvvisazione senza perdere di vista la dimensione emotiva della musica.
Registrato tra Bucarest, Zurigo, Oslo, Portland e altre città europee e nordamericane nel corso del 2025, l'album riunisce ancora una volta musicisti di altissimo livello. Al centro del progetto c'è Stephan Thelen, che oltre alle chitarre firma gran parte delle tastiere, dei sintetizzatori, dell'elettronica, della programmazione e dei suoi caratteristici fractal delays. Accanto a lui troviamo il chitarrista norvegese Eivind Aarset, capace di trasformare ogni nota in un paesaggio atmosferico, l'americano Jon Durant, sempre raffinato nel passare dalla chitarra tradizionale a quella fretless, e il batterista Yogev Gabay, autentico motore ritmico dell'intero lavoro. A completare il quadro intervengono Markus Reuter alla touch guitar in In Search of the Miraculous, Fabio Anile al Fender Rhodes nelle due parti di Eclipse, Stefan Huth al touch bass in In Search of the Miraculous e in Eclipse (Phase 1 e Phase 2), Giri Subramaniam alle tabla in Crossroads e Andi Pupato alle percussioni in Creatures of the Night.
Fin dalle prime note si ha la sensazione di entrare in un mondo sonoro costruito con grande cura. Ben presto, però, ci si accorge che dietro la complessità dei ritmi e dei particolari effetti creati da Stephan Thelen, come i suoi fractal delays, c'è una musica viva, ricca di emozioni e sempre in movimento. Nulla appare fine a sé stesso: ogni suono contribuisce a rendere il viaggio coinvolgente e naturale.
L'apertura con In Search of the Miraculous, ispirata all'omonimo libro del filosofo P. D. Ouspensky, racchiude perfettamente lo spirito dell'album. Il brano parte con un'energia travolgente e, poco alla volta, si trasforma in un viaggio più riflessivo, dove i continui intrecci ritmici scorrono con sorprendente naturalezza. Pur nella sua complessità, la musica non appare mai fredda o difficile: al contrario, coinvolge e accompagna l'ascoltatore dall'inizio alla fine.
L'album cambia subito prospettiva con Fractal Guitar Goes to Africa, dove il linguaggio ritmico di Thelen incontra suggestioni africane attraverso il contributo determinante di Aarset. Il risultato è uno dei momenti più immediati del disco, capace di fondere ricerca e groove con grande spontaneità.
Haumea, rilettura di un brano già apparso nel progetto Transneptunian Planets, acquista una nuova profondità grazie alle intense tessiture create da Aarset con l'EBow e al drumming preciso ma sempre espressivo di Gabay. Non è una semplice riproposizione, ma una nuova prospettiva su materiale già esistente, più atmosferica e cinematografica.
Tra gli episodi più affascinanti emerge Crossroads, dedicata a Bill Laswell, dove la chitarra acustica di Durant, la tabla di Giri Subramaniam e le tessiture elettriche di Aarset convivono con assoluta naturalezza. Qui il minimalismo di Thelen si apre a influenze world e ambient senza perdere la propria identità.
Ancora più evocativa è Creatures of the Night, probabilmente il momento più contemplativo dell'intero album. le percussioni di Andi Pupato, la chitarra fretless di Durant e le tessiture sonore che evocano il gamelan (ensemble tradizionale di indonesiano formato da metallofoni, gong e percussioni) costruiscono un paesaggio notturno ricco di sfumature, nel quale il silenzio assume la stessa importanza delle note.
Il momento più intenso del disco è rappresentato dalle due parti di Eclipse. Into the Darkness conduce l'ascoltatore in un'atmosfera cupa e carica di tensione, fatta di suoni elettronici e ambientazioni suggestive. Con Into the Light, invece, il clima cambia gradualmente e lascia spazio a melodie più luminose, sostenute dal Fender Rhodes di Fabio Anile e dagli intensi assoli di Jon Durant ed Eivind Aarset. È il brano che meglio racconta il significato dell'intero album: attraversare i momenti più difficili senza perdere la speranza di ritrovare la luce.
La breve In Search of the Miraculous (Coda) chiude il viaggio riprendendo il tema iniziale in una veste più sospesa e contemplativa, quasi fosse il naturale punto di arrivo di una ricerca che resta volutamente aperta.

Fractal Guitar 4 non è un disco pensato per chi cerca melodie immediate o strutture convenzionali. Richiede attenzione, tempo e disponibilità all'ascolto, ma ripaga con una straordinaria ricchezza di dettagli. Stephan Thelen dimostra ancora una volta come complessità e coinvolgimento possano convivere senza compromessi, costruendo un'opera in cui rock progressivo, minimalismo, ambient, jazz contemporaneo ed elettronica dialogano continuamente.
Più che una semplice raccolta di composizioni, questo lavoro appare come un viaggio nella possibilità stessa del suono: un percorso che utilizza la chitarra elettrica non soltanto come strumento, ma come mezzo per esplorare paesaggi interiori, tensioni ritmiche e contrasti emotivi. Un album che conferma Stephan Thelen come una delle voci più originali della ricerca musicale contemporanea.

The Search for the Miraculous Sound
With Fractal Guitar 4, released by MoonJune Records, Stephan Thelen continues a journey that began in 2015 and, through the previous albums Fractal Guitar (2018), Fractal Guitar 2 (2021) and Fractal Guitar 3 (2023), has transformed the electric guitar into a true laboratory of sonic exploration. If his work with Sonar has made him one of the most original figures in contemporary minimalism, this parallel series allows him to push even further, exploring the relationship between polyrhythms, digital effects and improvisation while never losing sight of the emotional side of music.
Recorded in 2025 between Bucharest, Zurich, Oslo, Portland and other European and North American cities, the album once again brings together a group of outstanding musicians. At the center of the project is Stephan Thelen, who, besides playing guitars, also contributes keyboards, synthesizers, electronics, programming and his distinctive fractal delays. Alongside him we find Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset, able to transform every note into an atmospheric landscape, American guitarist Jon Durant, always elegant in moving between traditional and fretless guitar, and drummer Yogev Gabay, the true rhythmic driving force of the entire album. Completing the lineup are Markus Reuter on touch guitar in In Search of the Miraculous, Fabio Anile on Fender Rhodes in both parts of Eclipse, Stefan Huth on touch bass in In Search of the Miraculous and Eclipse (Phase 1 and Phase 2), Giri Subramaniam on tabla in Crossroads and Andi Pupato on percussion in Creatures of the Night.
From the very first notes, the feeling is that of entering a carefully crafted sonic world. Soon, however, it becomes clear that behind the complexity of the rhythms and the unique effects created by Stephan Thelen, such as his fractal delays, there is a living music full of emotion and constantly evolving. Nothing feels like a mere technical exercise: every sound contributes to making the journey engaging and natural.
The opening track, In Search of the Miraculous, inspired by the book of the same name by philosopher P. D. Ouspensky, perfectly captures the spirit of the album. The piece begins with overwhelming energy and gradually transforms into a more reflective journey, where the constant rhythmic interactions flow with surprising naturalness. Despite its complexity, the music never feels cold or difficult; instead, it draws the listener in and accompanies them from beginning to end.
The album immediately changes direction with Fractal Guitar Goes to Africa, where Thelen’s rhythmic language meets African influences through Aarset’s important contribution. The result is one of the most immediate moments of the record, able to combine experimentation and groove with great spontaneity.
Haumea, a reinterpretation of a track originally featured on the Transneptunian Planets project, gains new depth thanks to the intense textures created by Aarset with the EBow and Gabay’s precise yet always expressive drumming. It is not simply a remake, but a new perspective on existing material, more atmospheric and cinematic.
Among the most fascinating pieces is Crossroads, dedicated to Bill Laswell, where Durant’s acoustic guitar, Giri Subramaniam’s tabla and Aarset’s electric textures blend together with complete naturalness. Here, Thelen’s minimalism opens up to world and ambient influences without losing its own identity.
Even more evocative is Creatures of the Night, probably the most contemplative moment of the entire album. Andi Pupato’s percussion, Durant’s fretless guitar and the sonic textures that evoke gamelan (a traditional Indonesian ensemble made of metallophones, gongs and percussion instruments) create a nocturnal landscape full of nuances, where silence becomes as important as the notes themselves.
The most intense moment of the album is represented by the two parts of Eclipse. Into the Darkness leads the listener into a dark and tense atmosphere, filled with electronic sounds and evocative landscapes. With Into the Light, however, the mood gradually changes, opening into brighter melodies supported by Fabio Anile’s Fender Rhodes and the passionate solos of Jon Durant and Eivind Aarset. It is the piece that best expresses the meaning of the entire album: facing the darkest moments without losing the hope of finding the light again.
The short In Search of the Miraculous (Coda) closes the journey by returning to the opening theme in a more suspended and contemplative form, almost like the natural conclusion of a search that intentionally remains open.
Fractal Guitar 4 is not an album designed for those looking for immediate melodies or conventional structures. It requires attention, time and an open mind, but rewards the listener with an extraordinary richness of detail. Stephan Thelen once again demonstrates how complexity and emotional involvement can coexist, creating a work where progressive rock, minimalism, ambient, contemporary jazz and electronics are in constant dialogue.
More than a simple collection of compositions, this album feels like a journey into the very possibilities of sound: a path that uses the electric guitar not only as an instrument, but as a means to explore inner landscapes, rhythmic tensions and emotional contrasts. A record that confirms Stephan Thelen as one of the most original voices in contemporary musical exploration.
