Ci sono album che nascono per guardare avanti e altri che scelgono di voltarsi indietro per ritrovare il punto da cui tutto è cominciato. Homage appartiene a questa seconda categoria. Dopo oltre quarant'anni di carriera, i Tesla ritornano idealmente ai giorni in cui erano una cover band nei locali della California, quando il loro repertorio era fatto delle canzoni che li avevano formati come musicisti e come appassionati di rock.
Lontano dall'essere un semplice esercizio nostalgico, Homage è un sincero atto di riconoscenza verso gli artisti che hanno lasciato un segno profondo nella storia della musica. Pubblicato da Frontiers Music , il disco raccoglie quattordici brani, tredici dei quali sono reinterpretazioni di autentici classici, affiancati dall'inedito Never Alone, nato proprio durante il percorso che ha portato alla realizzazione di questo progetto.

È una playlist costruita con il cuore prima ancora che con la testa, quella che probabilmente accompagnava i membri dei Tesla durante gli anni della loro formazione.
Il filo conduttore dell'intero album è la voce inconfondibile di Jeff Keith, chiamato ad attraversare mondi musicali molto diversi tra loro. Più che imitare interpreti così iconici, il cantante sceglie di rispettarne lo spirito, mantenendo sempre riconoscibile il timbro ruvido e personale che da decenni rappresenta uno dei marchi di fabbrica dei TESLA.
Accanto a lui, Frank Hannon impreziosisce ogni brano con chitarre, tastiere, pianoforte e organo, dimostrando ancora una volta la sua grande versatilità. Dave Rude, oltre alle chitarre, contribuisce anche con il basso e i cori, rafforzando un sound che rimane fedele alle radici hard rock della band. Brian Wheat, storico bassista del gruppo, alterna basso, tastiere, pianoforte e cori, aggiungendo profondità agli arrangiamenti, mentre Steve Brown, con batteria e percussioni, accompagna il viaggio musicale con un drumming essenziale, preciso e sempre al servizio delle canzoni. Insieme riescono a reinterpretare questi classici senza snaturarli, filtrandoli attraverso il linguaggio sonoro che i TESLA hanno costruito nel corso della loro lunga carriera.
L'apertura affidata a Never Alone assume un significato simbolico: è il ponte tra passato e presente, la dimostrazione che questo viaggio nella memoria non interrompe il percorso creativo del gruppo, ma lo alimenta. L'unico brano originale del disco nasce proprio dall'ispirazione maturata durante la realizzazione di Homage, come a sottolineare che guardare alle proprie radici può diventare lo stimolo per continuare a scrivere nuova musica.
Subito dopo, i Tesla si muovono con naturalezza attraverso un repertorio che attraversa decenni e generi differenti. La rilettura di Bring It On Home di Sam Cooke conserva tutto il calore soul dell'originale, mentre Spread Your Wings dei Queen, firmata da John Deacon, viene reinterpretata con rispetto verso la sua straordinaria sensibilità melodica, mantenendo però l'impronta hard rock della band californiana.
Con I Wish It Would Rain dei The Temptations, scritta da Norman Whitfield, Barrett Strong e Roger Penzabene, i TESLA entrano nel cuore della grande tradizione soul, mentre Night Moves di Bob Seger porta nel disco il fascino del rock americano più narrativo e malinconico. La celebre If I Can Dream di Walter Earl Brown, resa immortale da Elvis Presley, permette a Jeff Keith di confrontarsi con una delle interpretazioni vocali più intense della storia della musica.
Il viaggio prosegue con Come And Get It di Paul McCartney, brano nato per i Badfinger, e con I Got You (I Feel Good) di James Brown, dove emerge tutta l'energia ritmica e il groove del padrino del funk. La sensibilità melodica dei TESLA trova spazio anche in Give A Little Bit di Rick Davies e Roger Hodgson, uno dei brani più amati dei Supertramp, mentre I Love You della Climax Blues Band, qui proposta nella versione 2026, aggiunge una nuova sfumatura blues rock al percorso.
La band rende poi omaggio al southern rock con The Ballad Of Curtis Loew dei Lynyrd Skynyrd, scritta da Ronnie Van Zant e Allen Collins, prima di affrontare l'immortale Have You Ever Seen The Rain dei Creedence Clearwater Revival, composta da John Fogerty, una canzone che continua a unire malinconia e speranza. La potente interpretazione di I'd Rather Go Blind di Etta James, scritta da Ellington Jordan e Billy Foster, riporta invece il disco verso le radici blues e soul, affidandosi ancora una volta alla voce intensa di Jeff Keith.
A chiudere questo viaggio arriva Mind Your Own Business di Hank Williams Sr., un brano che porta nel finale tutta la leggerezza e la genuinità della tradizione country americana. Un mosaico di influenze diverse, unite dalla sensibilità dei Tesla, che trasformano ogni canzone in un incontro tra memoria, passione e identità musicale.

Del resto erano già trascorsi oltre vent'anni dalla pubblicazione della serie Real to Reel, e Homage ne raccoglie idealmente l'eredità con una prospettiva più matura e consapevole. Non è soltanto una raccolta di cover, ma il racconto del lungo viaggio musicale che ha portato i Tesla dai palchi dei club californiani a diventare una delle realtà più longeve e riconoscibili dell'hard rock americano. Ogni canzone custodisce un ricordo, un'influenza, un frammento di quella passione che ha acceso la scintilla della loro carriera e che, ancora oggi, continua ad alimentarne l'ispirazione.
È un disco che guarda al passato con profondo rispetto, ma senza mai smettere di vivere nel presente, ricordandoci che la musica è una straordinaria eredità capace di attraversare il tempo e di unire generazioni diverse. There are albums that are born looking forward, and others that choose to look back in order to rediscover the place where everything began. Homage belongs to this second category. After more than forty years of career, TESLA ideally return to the days when they were a cover band performing in California clubs, when their repertoire was made up of the songs that shaped them as musicians and as passionate rock listeners.
Far from being a simple nostalgic exercise, Homage is a sincere act of gratitude toward the artists who have left a deep mark on the history of music. Released by Frontiers Music, the album features fourteen tracks, thirteen of which are reinterpretations of authentic classics, alongside the original song "Never Alone", born during the creative journey that led to the making of this project.
The choice of songs reveals much about the band's identity. The album moves from the refined soul of Sam Cooke and David Ruffin to the energy of James Brown, from the sensitivity of Elvis Presley to the theatrical power of Freddie Mercury, while also embracing the southern rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the American rock of Bob Seger, the blues of Etta James, the country tradition of Hank Williams, and the timeless sound of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The central thread running through the entire album is the unmistakable voice of Jeff Keith, who is called upon to explore very different musical worlds. Rather than imitating such iconic singers, he chooses to respect their spirit, preserving the rough and personal tone that for decades has represented one of TESLA's trademarks.
Alongside him, Frank Hannon enriches each song with guitars, keyboards, piano and organ, once again demonstrating his remarkable versatility. Dave Rude, in addition to guitars, contributes bass and backing vocals, strengthening a sound that remains faithful to the band's hard rock roots. Brian Wheat, the group's historic bassist, alternates between bass, keyboards, piano and backing vocals, adding depth to the arrangements, while Steve Brown, with drums and percussion, supports the musical journey with a precise and essential approach, always serving the songs themselves. Together, they reinterpret these classics without altering their essence, filtering them through the sonic language TESLA have built throughout their long career.
The opening track "Never Alone" carries a symbolic meaning: it represents the bridge between past and present, proving that this journey through memories does not interrupt the band's creative path, but rather fuels it. The only original song on the album was born from the inspiration developed during the making of Homage, highlighting how returning to one's roots can become a source of inspiration for creating new music.
