Advent Horizon – Falling Together (Autoproduzione, 2026)
Tra riflessione, potenza e visioni progressive
A volte la musica diventa il modo più sincero per fermarsi, guardarsi dentro e mettere in discussione ciò che abbiamo sempre dato per certo. È da questa necessità che prende forma Falling Together, il nuovo album degli Advent Horizon, pubblicato il 15 maggio 2026. Un lavoro nato dalla riflessione sulle convinzioni che ci accompagnano fin dall'infanzia e sulla difficoltà di distinguere ciò che sentiamo davvero nostro da ciò che abbiamo semplicemente imparato ad accettare.
La band americana, guidata dal cantante, chitarrista e autore Rylee McDonald (voce, chitarre, tastiere e percussioni), affronta questo tema senza trasformarlo in una dichiarazione ideologica, ma lasciandolo scorrere attraverso una musica ricca, articolata e in continua evoluzione. Con lui troviamo Mike Lofgreen (batteria, percussioni e screams), Cason Wood (basso, basso fretless, sintetizzatori, pianoforte elettrico e acustico, organo e battimani), Grant Matheson (voce, tastiere e chitarre) e Kristen McDonald (voce). A completare il lavoro intervengono Zach Boorman (chitarre, pianoforte, sintetizzatori, cori e percussioni), Doug Robinson (chitarra aggiuntiva in In A Lone And Dreary World) e Cressa e Griffin McDonald (voci d'ambiente in Animals).
Il risultato è un album (il quarto della loro produzione) che unisce progressive rock, rock e progressive metal, mantenendo sempre una forte attenzione alla costruzione delle atmosfere, agli arrangiamenti e alla narrazione.
Il viaggio comincia con la suite In A Lone And Dreary World, quasi venti minuti nei quali gli Advent Horizon mostrano subito tutta la loro capacità di costruire atmosfere e cambi di tensione. Chitarre pesanti, passaggi acustici, momenti più sospesi e improvvise aperture aggressive si alternano senza perdere il filo. Interessante il contrasto tra la voce delicata di Kristen McDonald e le parti più dure, così come quel breve passaggio dal sapore flamenco che arriva quasi inaspettato. La melodia, però, rimane sempre al centro e alla fine è proprio quella a restarmi dentro.
Con Faith's Window il discorso diventa più immediato. Il brano si muove inizialmente su coordinate rock melodiche, ma porta con sé una vena più scura che cresce insieme alle tastiere e alle chitarre. L'ingresso delle voci aggressive cambia improvvisamente l'atmosfera, prima che la voce Kristen McDonald riporti il pezzo verso una dimensione più morbida. È un bel contrasto, semplice ma efficace.
Patience conquista già dalle prime battute. L'introduzione richiama il progressive più classico, poi la voce di Rylee McDonald e la chitarra danno maggiore energia al brano. La batteria aumenta progressivamente la tensione e il finale, affidato soprattutto all'incontro tra tastiere e chitarra, lascia una bella coda melodica. Un pezzo che ascolto con particolare piacere proprio per la sua immediatezza.
Più morbida è Past Life Parable, introdotta da un arpeggio che prepara l'ingresso della voce. Il ritornello è diretto e rimane facilmente impresso, ma il brano cresce soprattutto nella parte conclusiva. Il basso fretless aggiunge profondità e accompagna la musica verso un finale sempre più intenso, quasi drammatico. È qui che il pezzo cambia pelle e acquista maggiore forza.
Poi arrivano Gravity I e Gravity II, due momenti che sento quasi come un unico movimento. La prima parte nasce dalla chitarra acustica, alla quale si aggiungono rapidamente batteria e chitarra elettrica, fino a un breve sviluppo strumentale che prepara il terreno. La seconda riprende quella tensione e la porta più in alto: il suono diventa più pesante, le tastiere assumono un ruolo importante e la voce di Rylee accompagna il crescendo fino al finale. Un piccolo dittico nel quale gli Advent Horizon riescono a condensare molte delle loro caratteristiche.
A chiudere l'album è Animals, e trovo che sia una scelta particolarmente riuscita. L'arpeggio iniziale e il flauto creano subito un'atmosfera malinconica, quasi fiabesca, mentre la voce aggiunge una delicatezza che mi coinvolge molto. Il basso fretless e la chitarra acustica rendono il brano ancora più avvolgente, prima che l'elettrica arrivi a dare maggiore intensità. Ma è soprattutto la melodia vocale a rimanere nella memoria. Un finale che non ha bisogno di esagerare per lasciare il segno.
Advent Horizon
Con Falling Together gli Advent Horizon realizzano un album ricco di sfumature, nel quale progressive rock, rock e progressive metal convivono attraverso un equilibrio continuo tra potenza, melodia e atmosfera. Le composizioni mostrano una band capace di muoversi tra strutture articolate, momenti più intimi e passaggi di grande intensità, senza perdere una precisa identità.
Il tema della ricerca e della messa in discussione delle proprie convinzioni trova così una naturale corrispondenza nella musica, che procede attraverso contrasti, cambi di direzione e improvvise aperture. Dalla lunga costruzione di In A Lone And Dreary World fino alla delicatezza conclusiva di Animals, ogni brano aggiunge un tassello a un percorso coerente e ben costruito.
Falling Together è quindi un lavoro intenso e maturo, capace di unire ricerca sonora e immediatezza melodica. Un album che conferma la personalità degli Advent Horizon e lascia, al termine dell'ascolto, una sensazione di profondità e di continua evoluzione.

Between reflection, power and progressive visions
Sometimes music becomes the most honest way to stop, look within ourselves, and question what we have always taken for granted. This is where Falling Together, the new album by Advent Horizon, takes shape, released on May 15, 2026. It is a work born from reflecting on the beliefs that have accompanied us since childhood, and on the difficulty of distinguishing what truly belongs to us from what we have simply learned to accept.
The American band, led by vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Rylee McDonald (vocals, guitars, keyboards and percussion), approaches this subject without turning it into an ideological statement, instead allowing it to flow naturally through music that is rich, intricate and constantly evolving. Joining him are Mike Lofgreen (drums, percussion and screams), Cason Wood (bass, fretless bass, synthesizers, electric and acoustic piano, organ and hand claps), Grant Matheson (vocals, keyboards and guitars), and Kristen McDonald (vocals). Completing the album are Zach Boorman (guitars, piano, synthesizers, backing vocals and percussion), Doug Robinson (additional guitar on In A Lone And Dreary World), and Cressa and Griffin McDonald (background vocal ambience on Animals).
The result is the fourth album in their discography, bringing together progressive rock, rock and progressive metal, while maintaining a strong focus on atmosphere, arrangements and storytelling.
The journey begins with the suite In A Lone And Dreary World, almost twenty minutes in which Advent Horizon immediately demonstrate their ability to build atmospheres and shifts in tension. Heavy guitars, acoustic passages, suspended moments and sudden bursts of aggression alternate without ever losing their direction. The contrast between Kristen McDonald's delicate voice and the heavier sections is particularly effective, as is the brief flamenco-flavoured passage that arrives almost unexpectedly. The melody, however, always remains at the heart of the piece, and in the end it is precisely that melody that stays with me.
With Faith's Window, the approach becomes more immediate. The song initially moves through melodic rock territory, but carries a darker edge that gradually grows alongside the keyboards and guitars. The arrival of the aggressive vocals suddenly changes the atmosphere, before Kristen McDonald's voice brings the song back towards a softer dimension. A simple but effective contrast.
Patience makes an impression from the very first bars. The introduction recalls classic progressive rock, before Rylee McDonald's voice and the guitar give the song greater energy. The drums gradually build the tension, while the finale, centred on the meeting between keyboards and guitar, leaves a beautiful melodic afterglow. A track that stands out for its immediacy and natural sense of progression.
Softer in character is Past Life Parable, introduced by an arpeggio that prepares the entrance of the vocals. The chorus is direct and memorable, but the song truly grows during its final section. The fretless bass adds depth and carries the music towards an increasingly intense, almost dramatic ending. This is where the song changes character and gains even greater strength.
Then come Gravity I and Gravity II, two moments that feel almost like parts of a single movement. The first begins with acoustic guitar, quickly joined by drums and electric guitar, leading into a brief instrumental development that sets the stage for what follows. The second takes that tension and pushes it further: the sound becomes heavier, the keyboards take on a more prominent role, and Rylee's voice accompanies the crescendo towards the finale. A small musical diptych in which Advent Horizon manage to condense many of the elements that define their sound.
The album closes with Animals, and I find it a particularly fitting choice. The opening guitar arpeggio and flute immediately create a melancholic, almost fairy-tale atmosphere, while the vocals add a delicate quality that gives the song much of its charm. The fretless bass and acoustic guitar make it even more enveloping before the electric guitar arrives to add greater intensity. Above all, however, it is the vocal melody that remains in the memory. A finale that does not need to overstate anything to leave its mark.
With Falling Together, Advent Horizon deliver an album rich in nuances, where progressive rock, rock and progressive metal coexist through a constant balance of power, melody and atmosphere. The compositions reveal a band capable of moving between intricate structures, more intimate moments and passages of great intensity without losing its distinctive identity.
The theme of questioning and re-examining one's own beliefs therefore finds a natural counterpart in the music, which moves through contrasts, changes of direction and sudden openings. From the expansive construction of In A Lone And Dreary World to the delicate conclusion of Animals, every song adds another piece to a coherent and carefully crafted journey.
Falling Together is an intense and mature work, capable of combining sonic exploration with melodic immediacy. An album that confirms the distinctive personality of Advent Horizon and leaves, when the final note fades, a sense of depth and continuous evolution.
