A volte la musica riesce a raccontare immagini senza bisogno di uno schermo. Bastano pochi suoni, una trama elettronica, una chitarra sospesa nell’aria per aprire porte verso luoghi immaginari, corridoi bui, scenari dove qualcosa sembra dover accadere. È questa la sensazione che accompagna l’ascolto di Cinematic Suspense Vol. 1, il nuovo lavoro di Francesco Montanile, un album che porta il compositore dentro una dimensione sempre più vicina al cinema e alla narrazione sonora.
Dopo i due capitoli di Cinematic Songs, Montanile cambia prospettiva e concentra la propria ricerca sulle atmosfere più oscure del thriller e dell’horror. Il progetto nasce alla fine del 2024, quando il compositore sente il bisogno di esplorare un territorio più definito, dove la musica non sia soltanto melodia, ma diventi spazio, tensione, attesa.
Trentaquattro composizioni che sembrano piccoli frammenti di colonne sonore immaginarie, costruite per accompagnare immagini che ognuno può creare nella propria mente. Non c’è una storia unica da seguire, ma tante possibili narrazioni che prendono forma attraverso suoni profondi, ambientazioni sospese e improvvise aperture emotive.
Il legame con il cinema è parte integrante di questo percorso. Alcune delle composizioni presenti nell’album sono nate per Ombre, il thriller diretto da Roger Fratter e ambientato nel territorio lecchese, un’esperienza che ha permesso a Montanile di confrontarsi concretamente con il mondo della musica applicata alle immagini. Un passaggio importante per un artista che sembra trovare proprio nella dimensione cinematografica un naturale spazio espressivo.
Ascoltando Cinematic Suspense Vol. 1 si entra in un mondo fatto di ombre e contrasti. I synth creano profondità e mistero, gli archi aggiungono tensione emotiva, mentre gli elementi elettronici e il sound design costruiscono ambienti sonori dove il silenzio diventa quasi parte della composizione. In mezzo a queste atmosfere emerge la chitarra, strumento che da sempre caratterizza il linguaggio di Montanile, qui utilizzata non come semplice protagonista, ma come voce capace di dialogare con paesaggi elettronici e texture ambient.
È una musica che non cerca soltanto di impressionare, ma soprattutto di suggerire. Ogni traccia sembra lasciare una porta socchiusa, invitando l’ascoltatore a immaginare una scena, un volto, un luogo nascosto. La suspense non nasce soltanto dalla tensione sonora, ma dalla capacità di creare aspettativa, quella sensazione tipica del cinema dove il momento prima dell’evento spesso è più importante dell’evento stesso.
Anche l’immagine scelta per la copertina segue questa direzione. La chiave di violino, simbolo universale della musica, appare consumata e trasformata, inserita in un ambiente oscuro che richiama un corridoio abbandonato. Un’immagine che sembra raccontare il passaggio da una dimensione musicale tradizionale a un universo più cinematografico, fatto di memoria, mistero e inquietudine.

Sometimes music can tell a story through images without the need for a screen. A few sounds, an electronic texture, a guitar suspended in the air can be enough to open doors to imaginary places, dark corridors, and scenes where something seems about to happen. This is the feeling that accompanies the listening experience of Cinematic Suspense Vol. 1, the new work by Francesco Montanile, an album that takes the composer ever closer to cinema and the art of musical storytelling.
After the two chapters of Cinematic Songs, Montanile changes direction and turns his attention to the darker atmospheres of thriller and horror. The project began at the end of 2024, when the composer felt the need to explore a more defined territory, where music could become more than melody and instead transform into space, tension, and anticipation.
Thirty-four compositions that feel like fragments of imaginary soundtracks, created to accompany images that each listener can build in their own mind. There is no single story to follow, but rather countless possible narratives taking shape through deep sounds, suspended atmospheres, and sudden emotional openings.
The connection with cinema is an integral part of this journey. Some of the compositions featured on the album were originally written for Ombre, the thriller directed by Roger Fratter and set in the Lecco area. This experience allowed Montanile to engage directly with the world of music for film, marking an important step for an artist who seems to find in the cinematic dimension a natural space for his creative expression.
Listening to Cinematic Suspense Vol. 1 means entering a world of shadows and contrasts. Synths create depth and mystery, strings add emotional tension, while electronic elements and sound design build sonic environments in which silence almost becomes part of the composition. Within these atmospheres, the guitar emerges as the instrument that has always characterized Montanile’s musical language, but here it is not simply the protagonist. Instead, it becomes a voice capable of interacting with electronic landscapes and ambient textures.
This is music that does not simply seek to impress, but above all to suggest. Each track seems to leave a door slightly open, inviting the listener to imagine a scene, a face, a hidden place. The suspense does not come only from sonic tension, but from the ability to create anticipation—the feeling so familiar from cinema, where the moment before something happens can often be more powerful than the event itself.
The cover artwork follows the same direction. The treble clef, a universal symbol of music, appears worn and transformed, placed within a dark setting reminiscent of an abandoned corridor. It seems to represent the passage from a more traditional musical dimension into a more cinematic universe shaped by memory, mystery, and unease.
With Cinematic Suspense Vol. 1, Francesco Montanile ventures even further into the world of music for images, transforming sounds, tension, and silence into scenes waiting to be imagined. Thirty-four compositions move between mystery, unease, and suspense, bringing technique and sensitivity together to create a kind of cinema without a screen. This is music that does not simply accompany images, but suggests them, leaving the listener’s imagination to complete the story.
