A Progressive sound with a scandinavian heart
During my summer journey through the many releases of this period, I came across a project that immediately caught my attention. Jordsjø are a duo from Norway who, from the very first albums I had the chance to hear, have developed a highly personal language in which progressive rock, Scandinavian folk, psychedelia and hard rock meet, creating atmospheres suspended between past and present. They are one of those bands that, after so many years of listening, can still remind me why I keep looking to progressive music for something capable of surprising me.
Their journey began in 2014 with the meeting of Håkon Oftung and Kristian Frøland. After their early experiences, their debut album Jordsjø arrived in 2016, followed by Jordsjø II and then Jord, the album that in 2017 allowed the band to reach a wider audience beyond Norway. Jord was precisely what first caught my attention, thanks to its ability to evoke the great Scandinavian progressive tradition, with Änglagård as an inevitable reference, while still maintaining a distinctive identity of its own.
Today, Jordsjø return with Pestkrønikene, their ninth release, issued as part of the band's tenth-anniversary celebrations. The group is led by Håkon Oftung on vocals, guitar, flute and keyboards, and Kristian Frøland on drums and percussion, who have always represented the heart of the project. The album was born almost by accident, initially conceived as a collection of material recorded between 2020 and 2025 that had been left out of previous releases. Over time, however, those recordings found their own common thread and gradually became a fully formed album.
And it is an album that tells a dark story: wars, upheaval, the fall of kings, power, cults and sects, the destruction of an old order and, finally, the possibility of rebirth. Musically, Jordsjø seem to gather all these elements and transform them into a journey where Seventies hard rock, progressive, folk and psychedelia constantly meet and intertwine.
The title track, Pestkrønikene, opens the album with a powerful and immediate guitar riff, supported by excellent organ and soon balanced by Oftung's dreamy flute. The sound clearly looks back to the Seventies, while Frøland's warm, analogue rhythm section accompanies an atmosphere suspended between tension and release. The plague becomes a metaphor for humanity's tendency to repeat its own mistakes. An effective opening, enhanced by a truly splendid main riff.
White Magic is probably one of the album's most immediate tracks. Its hypnotic and psychedelic rhythm blends with folk influences, while Henriksen's theatrical voice tells of the manipulation exerted by a cult leader over his followers. The chorus gets into your head immediately, while the countermelodies continually enrich the arrangement. When the song slows down, the guitar takes over with an intense and highly lyrical solo.
With Seven Heads, Jordsjø suddenly shift gear and take us into a darker, more unsettling dimension. The vintage keyboards add depth, while guitar and flute alternate, creating constant contrasts. The drums push the song forward with determination and, in the central section, the music slows down and takes on an almost sinister character before regaining its energy towards the end. An intense track with a strong impact.
The instrumental Kaosvelde - Vasallens Elegi makes the album more intimate, allowing the acoustic instruments to breathe. Oftung's guitar and flute move together naturally, while Frøland's understated percussion accompanies the piece without weighing it down. The result is a delicate and melancholic moment that seems to pause the story for a while. The central flute passage adds a particularly evocative touch and makes this brief interlude even more affecting before the album moves forward.
With Kaosveldets Endelikt, the atmosphere changes completely. After the acoustic passage of the previous track, electric guitars, keyboards and a much more forceful rhythm section take over. The song moves with energy, alternating symphonic passages with moments closer to heavy rock. The Minimoog played by guest Lars Fredrik Frøislie is particularly striking, taking centre stage with a fiery and energetic solo. A direct, powerful and compelling track.
The Awakened opens a new chapter in the story, more reflective but no less intense. Andreas Prestmo's voice fits perfectly into the musical fabric, giving the song a broad and solemn character. Guitars, keyboards and Mellotron intertwine with great balance, while the rhythm section maintains a constant drive. It is a richly atmospheric piece, with a theatrical quality that recalls the finest progressive tradition. In some passages, it also reminds me of the great Gentle Giant.
With Spiritual Lament, Jordsjø enter a more intense and psychedelic dimension. Kristian Valbo's drumming immediately gives the piece character, while bass and guitar create a rich and incisive interplay. The long instrumental section eventually gives way to the vocals, introducing a brief folk-flavoured passage before the music begins to build again towards an increasingly powerful finale. The guitar brings the journey to a close with a highly expressive solo, while the drums remain a major presence. A varied and energetic track.
Closing this excellent album is Talisman II, a broad, powerful and epic piece that seems to gather together everything we have heard so far. Hard rock and symphonic prog coexist through several changes of rhythm, while folk remains present like an invisible thread running through the composition. Henriksen's return on vocals completes the story perfectly. Guitars, synthesizers and drums intertwine until the long, liberating instrumental coda brings the album to its conclusion.
Pestkrønikene confirms Jordsjø's ability to look towards the great progressive tradition without becoming trapped by it. Hard rock, folk, psychedelia and symphonic atmospheres come together in a personal musical narrative, full of images and shifting moods.
It is an album that grows with every listen, gradually revealing new details, nuances and emotions. And in the end, it leaves me with that feeling I always look for when I sit down with a new album: the pleasant surprise of having discovered something that was truly worth finding during my musical journey.
Jordsjø remind us that progressive music can still move us, surprise us and, above all, tell new stories without forgetting where it came from.
