Il Mago Del Gelato – Chi È Nicola Felpieri? (Sony/Numerouno, 2026)
Un viaggio tra afrobeat, funk, jazz e atmosfere cinematografiche
Desidero soffermarmi su un disco uscito lo scorso anno e che ho scoperto soltanto da pochi giorni, ma che mi ha colpito particolarmente per la sua originalità, la ricchezza delle contaminazioni e quella capacità di trasformare l’ascolto in un vero viaggio. Parlo di Chi È Nicola Felpieri?, l’album d’esordio de Il Mago Del Gelato, band milanese nata dall’incontro di quattro musicisti — Giovanni Doneda al basso elettrico e mandolino, Ferruccio Perrone alle chitarre e lap steel guitar, Pietro Gregori alla batteria e Alessandro Paolone a tastiere, sintetizzatori, vocoder e pianoforte — uniti da una profonda curiosità verso le culture e i suoni del mondo. Il nome stesso nasce da un bar di via Padova a Milano, luogo di incontro e contaminazione, dove lingue, persone e storie differenti si incrociano ogni giorno. Ed è proprio da questa mescolanza, da questa voglia di guardare oltre i propri confini, che prende forma una musica sorprendentemente libera, colorata e personale.Funk, afrobeat, jazz, psichedelia e suggestioni della grande musica per il cinema italiano degli anni Sessanta e Settanta entrano in un suono libero, colorato e profondamente ritmico, costruito attraverso groove, percussioni, fiati, chitarre e tastiere. Una musica che non ama stare ferma e che trova nella dimensione dal vivo il suo luogo naturale.
Dopo essersi fatti conoscere nei contesti più underground di Milano e attraverso numerosi concerti in Italia e all'estero, nel 2023 Il Mago Del Gelato viene inserito da Rolling Stone nella Classe 2023, la selezione dedicata alle promesse dell'anno. Nello stesso periodo arrivano i primi singoli, Zenzero, Elisir e Stracciatella, poi raccolti nell'EP Maledetta Quella Notte, prodotto da Marquis. Un sodalizio artistico che prosegue e diventa parte fondamentale della crescita della band.
Nel 2024 il gruppo entra nel roster di Dischi Numero Uno e inaugura una nuova fase del proprio percorso con Pandora. A dicembre arriva Granturismo, seguito nel gennaio 2025 da Tic Tac, realizzato insieme alla cantante francese Mélanie Chedeville. Sono i primi segnali di un album nel quale il linguaggio de Il Mago Del Gelato si amplia ancora, senza perdere quella naturale propensione alla contaminazione che ne rappresenta l'identità.
Ed è proprio con Chi È Nicola Felpieri? che questo mondo prende finalmente la forma di un vero racconto.
Il primo album sulla lunga distanza della band milanese è un viaggio senza coordinate precise. Parte idealmente da Milano e, traccia dopo traccia, attraversa atmosfere cinematografiche, paesaggi immaginari, ritmi africani, funk e jazz. Un percorso imprevedibile nel quale ogni brano sembra aprire una nuova porta e suggerire un'altra destinazione.
A produrre il disco è ancora Marquis, mentre la musica nasce dall'intesa di una band che sembra funzionare davvero come un unico organismo. Le singole personalità non vengono messe in primo piano, ma confluiscono in un suono compatto, ricco di sfumature e continuamente in movimento.
Vocoder e cori, percussioni, sintetizzatori dal sapore anni Ottanta, chitarre roots, pianoforte e una sezione ritmica di basso e batteria costruiscono un groove capace di cambiare pelle senza perdere la propria riconoscibilità. I suoni sono ampi, naturali e avvolgenti, anche grazie alle registrazioni realizzate al Sudestudio e a La Sabbia Studio.
Al centro del racconto c'è Nicola Felpieri, un personaggio misterioso e sfuggente, senza un'identità precisa e proprio per questo libero di assumere il volto che ogni ascoltatore vorrà dargli. Il titolo pone una domanda, ma il disco non cerca una risposta: lascia che sia la fantasia a costruire la storia di questo enigmatico protagonista. La cosa importante è che ognuno possa immaginarlo a modo proprio.
Il disco si apre con Depistaggio, e fin dalle prime battute Il Mago Del Gelato mette in chiaro le proprie intenzioni. È una fuga, un allontanamento immediato dalla quotidianità, sostenuto da un basso e una batteria incalzanti. Le percussioni alimentano il movimento, le chitarre disegnano riff asciutti, i fiati tagliano il tessuto sonoro e il vocoder dialoga con le voci corali. Una partenza che ha già il sapore di una strada percorsa a tutta velocità.
Segreto cambia prospettiva. Il ritmo si fa più sospeso e la musica sembra entrare nei territori della coscienza. È un brano onirico, quasi una fuga mentale, costruito attorno alla ricerca di una risposta a un pensiero che continua a tornare. La melodia sembra sussurrare invece di raccontare, lasciandoci in quella zona indefinita dove sogno e realtà iniziano a confondersi.
Con Tic Tac, già uscito come singolo prima dell’album, insieme a Mélanie Chedeville, arriva uno dei momenti più eleganti e sensuali del disco. Il ritmo afrobeat si fa più lento e sinuoso, avvolgendo una melodia morbida e rarefatta, mentre il pianoforte e il groove costruiscono un’atmosfera calda e sospesa. La voce di Mélanie attraversa il brano con delicatezza, aggiungendo un respiro internazionale e quella sfumatura parigina, fumosa e notturna, che rende questo brano uno degli episodi più affascinanti dell’album.
Poi arriva Granturismo, uscito anch’esso come singolo ad anticipare l’album, e improvvisamente il motore si accende. È una corsa senza sosta, una macchina che macina chilometri mentre il paesaggio scorre veloce davanti agli occhi. La frenesia meccanica si intreccia con i ricordi, le emozioni e quelle immagini che ognuno porta con sé quando parte verso qualcosa di sconosciuto. Il groove spinge continuamente in avanti, trasformando il brano in un’esperienza quasi fisica, un concentrato di energia e movimento che sembra impossibile arrestare.
Il Felpieri è invece il ritratto impossibile del protagonista dell'album. Una tavolozza di colori misteriosi e cinematografici, attraversata da atmosfere che sembrano provenire da una pellicola degli anni Settanta. Più che descrivere Nicola, il brano lo rende ancora più sfuggente.
Con In punta di piedi, anche questo pubblicato come singolo prima dell’uscita dell’album, insieme a Le Feste Antonacci, la temperatura sale nuovamente. Una disco-funk frizzante, estiva e colorata, un cocktail da sorseggiare senza troppi pensieri mentre il ritmo invita inevitabilmente a muoversi. È uno dei momenti più giocosi del disco, dove l’energia collettiva della band si fonde con quella degli ospiti e il groove diventa pura voglia di ballare.
Sembrava deserto ci porta in una dimensione più sospesa e inquieta, dove la realtà sembra lentamente perdere i propri contorni. Una melodia ripetuta e struggente procede quasi ipnotica, mentre il basso ruvido e ostinato mantiene il brano ancorato a una pulsazione profonda. Intorno si muovono le chitarre riverberate e i synth, che ampliano lo spazio sonoro e contribuiscono a creare quell'atmosfera straniante, quasi allucinata, nella quale tutto sembra accadere sul confine tra sogno e realtà.
In Controtempo compare la voce di Venerus, inserita perfettamente in un brano lento, malinconico e sognante. È una fotografia di un momento di crisi, della necessità di fermarsi e prendersi cura l'uno dell'altra. Una canzone che parla di vicinanza e fragilità, affrontando le difficoltà senza nascondersi.
Sulla sua scia arriva La fiamma dell'amore, più lenta e tropicale, attraversata da un romanticismo leggero e spensierato. Il groove arriva diretto e trasforma l'amore in qualcosa di fisico, luminoso e immediato.
La chiusura è affidata a Enrico Lascia Perdere, un brano dedicato ai sognatori, a chi continua a seguire la propria strada nonostante i consigli, le aspettative e i giudizi degli altri. La musica cresce gradualmente, avvolge e accompagna il protagonista verso una scelta semplice: ignorare il rumore intorno e fare ciò che sente davvero.
Ed è forse questa la filosofia che meglio descrive Il Mago Del Gelato.

E allora, dopo aver attraversato queste dieci tracce, forse la domanda iniziale rimane ancora senza risposta: Chi è Nicola Felpieri? Probabilmente nessuno di preciso e, allo stesso tempo, un po’ tutti noi. È un nome dietro cui nascondere una storia, un volto da immaginare, una destinazione da raggiungere senza sapere esattamente dove ci porterà la strada.
Chi È Nicola Felpieri? è un disco che non chiede di essere ascoltato distrattamente. Ha bisogno di essere seguito, lasciando che siano i ritmi, i colori, le percussioni, le chitarre, i fiati e le voci a costruire lentamente il proprio paesaggio. È musica che mette in movimento il corpo, ma sa anche fermarsi e lasciare spazio alla fantasia.
E forse è proprio questo che mi ha conquistato dopo averlo scoperto soltanto adesso, a distanza di un anno dalla sua uscita. Ci sono album che arrivano quando meno te lo aspetti e che, senza chiedere permesso, trovano immediatamente un posto nella tua quotidianità. Questo è uno di quelli.
Un disco da assaporare lentamente in questa estate bollente, magari al tramonto, quando il caldo comincia finalmente a lasciare spazio alla sera, oppure durante un viaggio, con i finestrini abbassati e nessuna destinazione precisa. Un disco da ascoltare lasciandosi trasportare dal groove, dalla sua energia contagiosa e da quella fantasia cinematografica che sembra trasformare ogni brano in una nuova scena.
Io, intanto, Nicola Felpieri continuo a immaginarlo sulla strada.
La macchina corre, la musica è alta, la città è ormai lontana e davanti c’è soltanto una strada tutta da inventare.
E forse, alla fine, è proprio questo il viaggio che Il Mago Del Gelato voleva regalarci.

A journey through afrobeat, funk, jazz and cinematic atmospheres
I would like to take a closer look at an album released last year that I only discovered a few days ago, but which particularly impressed me with its originality, its rich blend of influences, and its ability to turn listening into a genuine journey. I am talking about Chi È Nicola Felpieri?, the debut album by Il Mago Del Gelato, a Milan-based band formed by four musicians — Giovanni Doneda on electric bass and mandolin, Ferruccio Perrone on guitars and lap steel guitar, Pietro Gregori on drums, and Alessandro Paolone on keyboards, synthesizers, vocoder and piano — united by a deep curiosity about the cultures and sounds of the world. The band's name itself comes from a bar on Via Padova in Milan, a meeting place and crossroads of cultures where different languages, people and stories come together every day. It is precisely from this mixture, from this desire to look beyond their own borders, that their surprisingly free, colourful and distinctive music takes shape.
Funk, afrobeat, jazz, psychedelia and echoes of the great Italian film music of the 1960s and 1970s come together in a free-flowing, colourful and deeply rhythmic sound, built around grooves, percussion, horns, guitars and keyboards. Music that refuses to stand still and finds its natural home in the live setting.
After making a name for themselves in Milan's underground scene and through numerous concerts in Italy and abroad, in 2023 Il Mago Del Gelato were included in Rolling Stone's Class of 2023, its selection of the year's most promising emerging acts. Around the same time came their first singles, Zenzero, Elisir and Stracciatella, later collected on the EP Maledetta Quella Notte, produced by Marquis. A creative partnership that continued and became a fundamental part of the band's artistic growth.
In 2024 the group joined the roster of Dischi Numero Uno, opening a new chapter in their journey with Pandora. In December came Granturismo, followed in January 2025 by Tic Tac, recorded with French singer Mélanie Chedeville. These were the first glimpses of an album in which Il Mago Del Gelato further expanded its musical language without losing the natural inclination towards sonic contamination that defines their identity.
And it is with Chi È Nicola Felpieri? that this world finally takes shape as a fully developed story.
The Milanese band's first full-length album is a journey without fixed coordinates. It starts, ideally, in Milan and, track after track, moves through cinematic atmospheres, imaginary landscapes, African rhythms, funk and jazz. An unpredictable journey in which every song seems to open another door and suggest a new destination.
The album was once again produced by Marquis, while the music grows out of the chemistry of a band that truly seems to function as a single organism. Individual personalities are never pushed to the forefront; instead, they merge into a cohesive sound, rich in nuances and constantly in motion.
Vocoders and backing vocals, percussion, vintage-80s-flavoured synthesizers, rootsy guitars, piano and a rhythm section driven by bass and drums create a groove capable of constantly changing shape without losing its identity. The sound is spacious, natural and enveloping, also thanks to the recordings made at Sudestudio and La Sabbia Studio.
At the centre of the story is Nicola Felpieri, a mysterious and elusive character with no precise identity and, for precisely that reason, free to take on whatever face each listener chooses to give him. The title asks a question, but the album does not seek an answer: it leaves it to the imagination to create the story of this enigmatic protagonist. The important thing is that everyone can imagine him in their own way.
The album opens with Depistaggio, and from the very first bars Il Mago Del Gelato makes its intentions clear. It is an escape, an immediate departure from everyday life, driven by an insistent bass and drums. The percussion fuels the movement, the guitars sketch out dry riffs, the horns cut through the sonic fabric, and the vocoder interacts with the choral vocals. A beginning that already feels like a road travelled at full speed.
Segreto changes perspective. The rhythm becomes more suspended and the music seems to enter the territory of consciousness. It is a dreamlike track, almost a mental escape, built around the search for an answer to a thought that keeps returning. The melody seems to whisper rather than tell a story, leaving us in that undefined space where dreams and reality begin to blur.
With Tic Tac, already released as a single ahead of the album and featuring Mélanie Chedeville, comes one of the record's most elegant and sensual moments. The afrobeat rhythm becomes slower and more sinuous, wrapping itself around a soft, atmospheric melody, while piano and groove create a warm and suspended mood. Mélanie's voice moves delicately through the song, adding an international feel and that smoky, nocturnal Parisian shade that makes the track one of the album's most fascinating moments.
Then comes Granturismo, also released as a single ahead of the album, and suddenly the engine starts. It is a non-stop race, a car eating up miles while the landscape rushes past the windows. The mechanical frenzy intertwines with memories, emotions and the images each of us carries when setting off towards something unknown. The groove keeps pushing forward, turning the track into an almost physical experience, a concentrated burst of energy and movement that seems impossible to stop.
Il Felpieri is instead an impossible portrait of the album's protagonist. A palette of mysterious and cinematic colours, crossed by atmospheres that seem to come from a 1970s film. Rather than describing Nicola, the track makes him even more elusive.
With In punta di piedi, also released as a single before the album, together with Le Feste Antonacci, the temperature rises again. A lively, summery and colourful disco-funk track, like a cocktail to sip without too much thought while the rhythm inevitably makes you want to move. It is one of the album's most playful moments, where the band's collective energy merges with that of their guests and the groove becomes pure desire to dance.
Sembrava deserto takes us into a more suspended and unsettling dimension, where reality seems slowly to lose its contours. A repetitive, poignant melody moves almost hypnotically, while the rough, insistent bass keeps the track anchored to a deep pulse. Around it, reverberated guitars and synths expand the sonic space, creating a strange, almost hallucinatory atmosphere in which everything seems to happen on the boundary between dream and reality.
In Controtempo, Venerus' unmistakable voice appears, perfectly suited to a slow, melancholy and dreamlike track. It is a snapshot of a moment of crisis, of the need to stop and take care of one another. A song about closeness and vulnerability, confronting difficulties without hiding from them.
Following in its wake comes La fiamma dell'amore, slower and more tropical, infused with a light-hearted, carefree romanticism. The groove hits directly, turning love into something physical, bright and immediate.
The album closes with Enrico Lascia Perdere, a song dedicated to dreamers, to those who continue to follow their own path despite advice, expectations and other people's judgement. The music gradually grows, enveloping the listener and accompanying the protagonist towards a simple choice: to ignore the noise around him and do what he truly feels is right.
And perhaps this is the philosophy that best describes Il Mago Del Gelato.
After travelling through these ten tracks, perhaps the initial question still remains unanswered: Who is Nicola Felpieri? Probably no one in particular and, at the same time, a little bit of all of us. A name behind which to hide a story, a face to imagine, a destination to reach without knowing exactly where the road will take us.
Chi È Nicola Felpieri? is not an album to be listened to casually. It deserves to be followed, allowing the rhythms, colours, percussion, guitars, horns and voices to slowly build their own landscape. It is music that makes the body move, but also knows when to stop and leave room for the imagination.
And perhaps that is precisely what captivated me after discovering it only now, a year after its release. Some albums arrive when you least expect them and, without asking permission, immediately find a place in your everyday life. This is one of them.
An album to savour slowly during this scorching summer, perhaps at sunset, when the heat finally begins to give way to the evening, or while travelling, with the windows down and no particular destination in mind. An album to listen to while surrendering to its groove, its contagious energy and its cinematic imagination, which seems to transform every song into a new scene.
In the meantime, I continue to imagine Nicola Felpieri out on the road.
The car is moving, the music is loud, the city is now far behind, and ahead there is nothing but a road waiting to be invented.
And perhaps, in the end, that is exactly the journey Il Mago Del Gelato wanted to give us.
