Un viaggio sonoro che nasce lontano e arriva al cuore

Mi avevano già colpito favorevolmente con Take A Closer Look del 2020 e, a distanza di qualche anno, gli Osiris tornano a confermare tutta la loro bravura con Within A Dream. Un album che ritrova una band capace di unire progressive rock, atmosfere suggestive e una forte identità culturale, portando con sé una storia musicale iniziata nel 1980 a Manama, in Bahrain. Fondati dai fratelli Mohamed e Nabil Alsadeqi, gli Osiris sono considerati la prima band di progressive rock del Bahrain e tra i pionieri del genere nell’area del Golfo Persico. Within A Dream è così un nuovo capitolo di una storia lunga più di quarant’anni, ma soprattutto la conferma di una band che ha ancora qualcosa da raccontare.

Ascoltare oggi gli Osiris significa quindi entrare in una storia che va ben oltre la semplice musica. Una storia fatta di progressive rock, identità culturale e di un legame profondo con la tradizione araba, elementi che la band ha saputo inserire nel proprio linguaggio senza rinunciare alla ricerca e alla libertà espressiva tipiche del prog.

Within A Dream si sviluppa attraverso cinque lunghe composizioni per quasi cinquantasei minuti di musica, costruendo un percorso prevalentemente atmosferico e melodico, nel quale le tastiere assumono un ruolo fondamentale. Alla voce troviamo Syed Ahmed Rawanbakhsh, mentre Mohamed Alsadeqi si occupa di chitarra e voce e Hadi Saeed del basso. Nabil Alsadeqi, fondatore della band insieme al fratello Mohamed, è alla batteria e al pianoforte, affiancato alle tastiere da Nader Sharif e Abdul Razzaq Arian. Completa la formazione Khalid Shamlan, impegnato al pianoforte, alle tastiere e alla voce. Un intreccio strumentale ricco, nel quale le diverse tastiere, le linee di Minimoog, le chitarre e i continui cambi di ritmo riportano immediatamente a quella dimensione progressive che appartiene da sempre al DNA degli Osiris.

L'apertura con la lunga House Of Pain è già un invito a lasciarsi trasportare. La voce di Syed Ahmed Rawanbakhsh si muove all’interno di un tessuto musicale ricco di cambiamenti, dove la chitarra di Mohamed Alsadeqi dialoga con le tastiere e con una sezione ritmica capace di accompagnare la musica attraverso differenti atmosfere. Non è un progressive costruito soltanto sulla complessità: c'è soprattutto molta melodia e il desiderio di raccontare, attraverso la musica, emozioni e stati d'animo.

Con Freedom Within A Dream, sempre dal minutaggio generoso, il viaggio diventa ancora più introspettivo. Il titolo stesso suggerisce una riflessione sulla libertà e sul confine sottile tra sogno e realtà, mentre la musica procede attraverso aperture melodiche e passaggi più intensi. Gli Osiris dimostrano di saper utilizzare la struttura progressiva come uno spazio narrativo, lasciando che siano gli strumenti a dare forma alle immagini.

Raz introduce ulteriori sfumature e conferma l'importanza delle tastiere nell'equilibrio sonoro dell'album. Sono proprio gli intrecci strumentali, i cambi di ritmo e le improvvise aperture melodiche a rendere l'ascolto sempre dinamico, senza perdere quella componente atmosferica che caratterizza l'intero lavoro.

Nell’altrettanto lunga Every Tear Is A Mother Sheds emerge invece una dimensione più emotiva. La musica sembra rallentare il passo e lasciare maggiore spazio alla voce, alle melodie e alle sensazioni. È uno dei momenti in cui il progressive della band appare meno interessato alla pura tecnica e più concentrato sulla capacità di comunicare.

La conclusiva Don't Ask Me Why chiude il viaggio con una sensibilità quasi contemplativa. Dopo le trasformazioni e i cambi di atmosfera che hanno attraversato l'album, rimane una sensazione di sospensione, come se il sogno evocato dal titolo continuasse anche dopo l'ultima nota.

Quello che rende particolarmente interessante Within A Dream è il modo in cui gli Osiris continuano a portare avanti una propria identità dopo oltre quarant'anni di storia. La loro musica nasce dal progressive rock occidentale, ma nel corso degli anni hanno saputo costruire un linguaggio profondamente personale, nel quale confluiscono melodie della tradizione araba, ritmi e linee di percussioni bahreinite e suggestioni legate alla cultura del Medio Oriente. È proprio questo incontro tra progressive rock e tradizione musicale del loro Paese a rendere il sound della band così riconoscibile

È una storia iniziata nei primi anni Ottanta, quando in Bahrain non esistevano nemmeno strutture per la stampa dei vinili e il primo album omonimo del 1982 dovette essere prodotto nelle Filippine. Una storia poi interrotta da una lunga pausa tra il 1993 e il 2000, prima della riscoperta internazionale attraverso le ristampe della francese Musea Records.

Oggi Within A Dream dimostra che quella storia non è affatto terminata. Gli Osiris continuano a guardare al progressive rock con uno sguardo personale, mescolando memoria, cultura e ricerca sonora. Un album da ascoltare senza fretta, lasciandosi accompagnare dalle sue tastiere, dalle chitarre e da quelle atmosfere che sembrano arrivare da un luogo sospeso tra sogno e realtà.

An emotional sonic journey that begins far away and reaches the heart 

They had already made a very positive impression on me with Take A Closer Look in 2020, and now, a few years later, Osiris once again confirm their talent with Within A Dream. This is an album that finds a band capable of combining progressive rock, evocative atmospheres and a strong cultural identity, carrying with it a musical story that began in 1980 in Manama, Bahrain. Founded by brothers Mohamed and Nabil Alsadeqi, Osiris are regarded as the first progressive rock band from Bahrain and among the pioneers of the genre in the Persian Gulf region. Within A Dream is therefore a new chapter in a story spanning more than forty years, but above all, a confirmation that this is a band that still has something to say.

Listening to Osiris today means entering a story that goes far beyond music itself. It is a story built on progressive rock, cultural identity and a deep connection with Arab musical traditions, elements that the band has incorporated into its own musical language without ever giving up the exploration and expressive freedom that are so characteristic of prog.

Within A Dream unfolds through five extended compositions, offering almost fifty-six minutes of music and creating a predominantly atmospheric and melodic journey in which keyboards play a fundamental role. On vocals we find Syed Ahmed Rawanbakhsh, while Mohamed Alsadeqi handles guitar and vocals and Hadi Saeed plays bass. Nabil Alsadeqi, who founded the band with his brother Mohamed, is on drums and piano, joined on keyboards by Nader Sharif and Abdul Razzaq Arian. Completing the line-up is Khalid Shamlan, who contributes piano, keyboards and vocals. It is a rich instrumental interplay in which the various keyboards, Minimoog lines, guitars and constant rhythmic changes immediately bring us back to the progressive dimension that has always been part of Osiris’ DNA.

The opening track, the lengthy House Of Pain, is already an invitation to let yourself be carried away. Syed Ahmed Rawanbakhsh’s voice moves through a richly changing musical landscape, where Mohamed Alsadeqi’s guitar interacts with the keyboards and a rhythm section capable of guiding the music through different atmospheres. This is not progressive rock built solely around complexity: above all, there is plenty of melody and a desire to express emotions and moods through music.

With Freedom Within A Dream, once again generous in length, the journey becomes even more introspective. The title itself suggests a reflection on freedom and the delicate boundary between dreams and reality, while the music moves through melodic openings and more intense passages. Osiris demonstrate their ability to use the progressive structure as a narrative space, allowing the instruments to give shape to images and emotions.

Raz introduces further shades and confirms the importance of keyboards within the album’s sonic balance. It is precisely the instrumental interplay, rhythmic changes and sudden melodic openings that keep the listening experience constantly dynamic, without losing the atmospheric quality that characterizes the entire work.

In the equally extended Every Tear Is A Mother Sheds, a more emotional dimension emerges. The music seems to slow down and leave more room for voice, melodies and feelings. It is one of those moments when the band’s progressive rock appears less concerned with pure technique and more focused on its ability to communicate.

The closing Don't Ask Me Why brings the journey to an almost contemplative conclusion. After all the transformations and changes of atmosphere that have shaped the album, what remains is a sense of suspension, as though the dream evoked by the title continues even after the final note.

What makes Within A Dream particularly interesting is the way Osiris continue to carry forward their own identity after more than forty years of history. Their music is rooted in Western progressive rock, but over the years they have developed a deeply personal language incorporating melodies from Arab musical traditions, Bahraini rhythms and percussion patterns, and influences connected to the culture of the Middle East. It is precisely this meeting between progressive rock and the musical traditions of their homeland that makes the band’s sound so distinctive.

It is a story that began in the early Eighties, when Bahrain did not even have facilities for pressing vinyl records and the band’s self-titled debut album, released in 1982, had to be manufactured in the Philippines. The story was then interrupted by a long hiatus between 1993 and 2000, before the band was rediscovered internationally through the reissues of the French label Musea Records.

Today, Within A Dream proves that this story is far from over. Osiris continue to approach progressive rock from their own perspective, blending memory, culture and sonic exploration. An album to be listened to without haste, allowing yourself to be carried away by its keyboards, guitars and those atmospheres that seem to come from a place suspended somewhere between dream and reality.
