C’è qualcosa di profondamente vero, quasi confessionale, nel modo in cui Angela Verbrugge affronta questo nuovo progetto. In The Wonder Of The Night è, prima di tutto, un incontro — tra voce e pianoforte, tra due musicisti che si ascoltano e respirano insieme, tra la notte e tutto ciò che può accadere quando il mondo rallenta e resta solo il suono.
Dopo tre album in formazioni più ampie, la cantante canadese sceglie la via dell’intimità. Accanto a lei, il newyorkese Ray Gallon, pianista di lunghissimo corso, radicato nel blues e nel bebop, già al fianco di Ron Carter, Art Farmer, Lionel Hampton. Il risultato è un dialogo continuo: elegante, essenziale, mai esibito. Gallon costruisce spazi, apre porte, suggerisce respiri; Verbrugge entra con la sua voce limpida e calda, che sa essere ironica, sensuale, malinconica, e sempre naturale.

l disco raccoglie undici tracce, tra standard e composizioni originali, ed è un viaggio coerente, dentro la notte ma anche dentro il mestiere e la sensibilità di un’interprete che ormai si è conquistata un posto tra le voci più raffinate del Nord America. Non a caso è stata eletta “Vocalist of the Year” da JazzTimes e All About Jazz e “Artista jazz dell’anno” ai Western Canadian Music Award 2024.
L’apertura, ’S’posin’ (Andy Razaf, Paul Denniker), è un piccolo manifesto: ritmo brioso, sorriso nella voce, un gioco di tempi e pause che rivela tutto il piacere del cantare. La Verbrugge fluttua con naturalezza sullo swing brillante di Gallon, accarezzando il testo e restituendogli una freschezza contagiosa.
Subito dopo arrivano gli inediti, dove Angela si mostra anche autrice di talento. Paradise Defined esprime con leggerezza un’idea semplice e luminosa — la vera connessione umana come definizione di paradiso. I’m 99% Sure of You, scritta con la collega Caity Gyorgy, è ironica e swingante, ritratto di un cuore che esita, ancora indeciso se abbandonarsi o meno all’amore. I’m A Cliché rallenta i battiti e si fa introspezione, con una delicatezza che ricorda certe ballate anni ’50, tra ironia e malinconia, lucida consapevolezza e abbandono.
The Gift (Recado Bossa) (Paul Francis Webster, Djalma Ferreira) aggiunge un tocco sudamericano, leggero e sinuoso, dove la voce si lascia cullare dal ritmo in una danza intima e raffinata.
C’è poi On a Night Such as This, un altro inedito dell’album, collaborazione con Ken Takata, che sembra uscita da un vecchio film romantico: una storia d’amore sotto la pioggia, il pianoforte che disegna i riflessi, la voce che accarezza le parole. È una canzone che incarna perfettamente il tema dell’album — quella meraviglia della notte dove tutto può accadere e ogni emozione trova il suo spazio.
Il titolo dell’album arriva con il raffinato medley Moonlight Becomes You - In the Wonder of the Night (Johnny Burke, Jimmy Van Heusen / Angela Verbrugge, Caity Gyorgy), dove Angela intreccia uno standard con un suo brano originale, un altro inedito dell’album: un incontro tra passato e presente che sintetizza perfettamente la sua poetica — rispettosa della tradizione ma desiderosa di scrivere nuove pagine nello stesso linguaggio.
Nelle versioni di Reaching for the Moon (Irving Berlin), It’s De-Lovely (Cole Porter), Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye (Cole Porter) e Moonlight in Vermont (Karl Suessdorf, John Blackburn), Verbrugge e Gallon toccano l’equilibrio ideale tra omaggio e reinvenzione.
Gli arrangiamenti sono sobri, le scelte ritmiche mai scontate, e il modo in cui la cantante gioca con il tempo e con il fraseggio dimostra quanto profondo sia il suo legame con lo swing e con la parola.
E in effetti, In The Wonder Of The Night è proprio questo: un invito a fermarsi, ad ascoltare senza fretta, a lasciarsi attraversare dalle emozioni più semplici e vere. C’è qualcosa di profondamente umano in questo disco — una dolcezza che non cerca effetti, ma arriva dritta al cuore. Mi piace pensare che la notte di Angela Verbrugge sia anche un po’ la nostra: quel momento in cui tutto tace e restano solo una voce e un pianoforte, a ricordarci che la bellezza può essere così, discreta e luminosa.

Between standards and new melodies, a journey into the silent wonder of the night
There is something profoundly true, almost confessional, in the way Angela Verbrugge approaches this new project. In The Wonder Of The Night is, above all, a meeting — between voice and piano, between two musicians who listen and breathe together, between the night and all that can happen when the world slows down and only sound remains.
After three albums with larger ensembles, the Canadian singer chooses the path of intimacy. By her side is New Yorker Ray Gallon, a long-experienced pianist rooted in blues and bebop, who has performed with Ron Carter, Art Farmer, and Lionel Hampton. The result is a continuous dialogue: elegant, essential, never showy. Gallon builds spaces, opens doors, suggests breaths; Verbrugge enters with her clear, warm voice, capable of irony, sensuality, melancholy, and always naturalness.
A jazz album in the truest sense: built on listening, silences, and complicity. Released by G2 Records & Publishing, In The Wonder Of The Night is a small nocturnal journey between light and shadow, where simplicity becomes emotion.
The album features eleven tracks, between standards and original compositions, forming a coherent journey — into the night but also into the craft and sensibility of a performer who has earned her place among North America’s most refined voices. It is no coincidence that she was named “Vocalist of the Year” by JazzTimes and All About Jazz, and “Jazz Artist of the Year” at the 2024 Western Canadian Music Awards.
The opening, ’S’posin’ (Andy Razaf, Paul Denniker), is a small manifesto: lively rhythm, a smile in the voice, a play of timing and pauses revealing the sheer joy of singing. Verbrugge floats naturally over Gallon’s bright swing, caressing the lyrics and giving them a contagious freshness.
Next come the original tracks, where Angela also shows her talent as a songwriter. Paradise Defined expresses a simple, luminous idea — true human connection as a definition of paradise. I’m 99% Sure of You, written with fellow singer Caity Gyorgy, is playful and swinging, a portrait of a heart hesitating, still unsure whether to surrender to love. I’m A Cliché slows the heartbeat and turns inward, with a delicacy reminiscent of certain 1950s ballads, between irony and melancholy, lucid awareness and surrender.
The Gift (Recado Bossa) (Paul Francis Webster, Djalma Ferreira) adds a South American touch, light and sinuous, where the voice is gently cradled by the rhythm in an intimate, refined dance.
Then comes On a Night Such as This (Angela Verbrugge, Ken Takata), another original track on the album, which seems lifted from an old romantic film: a love story in the rain, piano painting reflections, the voice caressing the words. It perfectly embodies the album’s theme — that wonder of the night where anything can happen and every emotion finds its space.
The album’s title track appears in the refined medley Moonlight Becomes You / In the Wonder of the Night (Johnny Burke, Jimmy Van Heusen / Angela Verbrugge, Caity Gyorgy), where Angela weaves a standard with one of her original compositions, another original track on the album: a meeting of past and present that perfectly summarizes her poetic approach — respectful of tradition but eager to write new pages in the same language.
In the renditions of Reaching for the Moon (Irving Berlin), It’s De-Lovely (Cole Porter), Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye (Cole Porter), and Moonlight in Vermont (Karl Suessdorf, John Blackburn), Verbrugge and Gallon achieve the ideal balance between homage and reinvention.
The arrangements are sober, the rhythmic choices never predictable, and the way the singer plays with time and phrasing demonstrates her deep connection to swing and to the words.
And indeed, In The Wonder Of The Night is exactly that: an invitation to pause, to listen without rush, to let oneself be touched by the simplest and most genuine emotions. There is something profoundly human in this record — a sweetness that seeks no effect, but reaches straight to the heart. I like to think that Angela Verbrugge’s night is also a little ours: that moment when everything is quiet, and only a voice and a piano remain, reminding us that beauty can be simple, discreet, and luminous.
